What people love about Banff National Park Tours
- 4-Day Rockies Winter Wonderland Tour | Banff & Lake Louise & Lake Minnewanka or Bubble Lake | Features
Excellent tour & good itinerary for a short visit.
- Canadian Rockies Express - 4 days
It was a enlightening experience. Quick timing, but perfect for the goals I wanted to reach. The stops for the highlighted spots were well planned and ample time was allowed. Guide Ryan is a well informed, passionate individual who shows deep caring for the environment and the people of his country. He also cares for his "charges". His individual attention and his camaraderie was from the heart. Refreshing. But do try not to be late. The eyes flash. Bus driver Mr. Yee is an extraordinary person. How does he handle all those miles in such an exemplary fashion?! What a good guy. Oversees us all. This trip was not what I expected. It was so much more. I met so many nice folks (Julie! You're WONDERFUL!!!). All the best to everyone. From my heart.

Small Group
7 tours in Banff National ParkSmall group tours through the Canadian Rockies combine active exploration with classic sightseeing experiences. The tours typically run 5-8 days, featuring unique activities like walking on Athabasca Glacier to sample pure glacial water, tackling the challenging Bertha Lake trail and going for leisurely floats down Bow River near Canmore, where elk often wander along the banks. Our travelers tell us they love the balanced itineraries - one day scaling Burstall Pass with optional technical climbing routes, then switching to an easy river float the next. The camping tours naturally build friendships over meals by the fire, while lodge options include nights in heritage properties. Local guides like Ben Hutchinson bring deep knowledge to each location, planning smart routes that take you to Moraine Lake early for photos, out to Spirit Island on Maligne Lake when light conditions peak and through the fascinating limestone corridors of Johnston Canyon. Multi-day expeditions in Yoho National Park push your boundaries on paths like the glacier-framed Iceline, while mixed itineraries with day hikes and proper beds suit those seeking moderate activity and comfort in equal measure.

Top Banff National Park travel itineraries to fit your plans
Our week-long tours come in three distinct styles that let you really sink into Rocky Mountain life. Nature lovers tend to pick our wildlife-focused routes through Jasper National Park, including that magical cruise to Spirit Island on Maligne Lake. Those interested in local culture go for tours featuring meet-and-greets with Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers and deep dives into regional traditions. For a touch of luxury, we offer routes staying at the grand Fairmont hotels - our guests often say it's like sleeping in mountain castles. Every 7-day tour includes driving the Icefields Parkway, which our travelers consistently rate as their favorite part, especially stopping at Peyto Lake and walking on the ancient Athabasca Glacier where you can drink straight from the ice.
Our 10-day journeys start with an overnight train ride from Vancouver, either on VIA Rail's Canadian or the Rocky Mountaineer, winding through British Columbia's interior. Our guests love opening their curtains to Mount Robson - North America's highest peak at nearly 13,000 feet. These longer stays in the Rockies mean time for special experiences: horse-drawn sleigh rides at Lake Louise, guided ice walks in Maligne Canyon and watching for Northern Lights in Jasper, the world's second-largest Dark Sky Preserve. Winter visitors particularly enjoy Vancouver's Canyon Lights at Capilano Suspension Bridge and spending Christmas morning surrounded by Banff's snow-covered peaks.

- Fall / Autumn 2025
Fall tours make the most of color changes along the Icefields Parkway. The Canadian Rockies Express stops strategically at Bow Lake, Peyto Lake when alpine larches turn gold. Our 5-day Select tours catch the final weeks Moraine Lake stays open in mid-October, combining it with quiet walks through Johnston Canyon after peak season ends. Many routes finish with wine tasting in the Okanagan Valley en route to Vancouver, which our customers say really complements the autumn views. The guides know exactly when to time stops for mountain photography and also wildlife spotting as animals prepare for winter. Looking at the main tour operators running Canadian Rockies trips, Trafalgar stands out according to what our travelers tell us. Their guide Ben Hutchinson gets mentioned often - he really knows his stuff and keeps the whole experience engaging and fun. Globus delivers solid tours too, and their guide Tarek Sabet receives consistent praise for running things smoothly and sharing deep knowledge about the region. One note of caution about Intrepid Travel though - we've heard from quite a few customers who found the activity ratings didn't quite match what they experienced on the ground. Some were caught off guard by more challenging sections than expected. The pricing for optional activities has also been a bit of an issue, with actual costs often coming in higher than what's listed in their materials. Both Trafalgar and Globus maintain reliable standards with professional guides who know the Canadian Rockies well. Just make sure to look carefully at Intrepid's activity levels and factor in some extra budget for their optional experiences if you go that route.
- Spring 2026
Spring tours catch that sweet spot when the Rockies shift between seasons. Our 5-day Select routes time it just right for early May when the Columbia Icefield opens - you can ride the Ice Explorer onto Athabasca Glacier before the big crowds arrive. We include Moraine Lake stops once it starts thawing mid-May, though guides adjust if the road isn't clear yet. A highlight for many is soaking in Radium Hot Springs while gazing at snowy peaks. Our travelers really value how these spring tours mix indoor comfort with outdoor exploration since the weather tends to change quickly.
- Summer 2026
Summer opens up the full range of what's possible in the Rockies. The Classic Canadian Rockies tour pairs hiking at Moraine Lake's vivid blue waters with a boat trip to Spirit Island on Maligne Lake - it's consistently rated as the trip highlight by our guests. Active tours take you hiking Bertha Lake trail and exploring Red Rock Canyon before nights under canvas, while luxury options use the grand railway hotels as bases. The Rocky Mountaineer adds a different perspective as you relax in glass-domed cars through mountain passes. These summer tours work well because they balance guided activities with free time to explore Banff Avenue or take optional Bow River float trips.

What makes Banff so special as Canada's first national park and why is it a World Heritage Site?
You know it's pretty amazing - Banff became Canada's very first national park way back in 1885 and UNESCO recognized just how incredible it is in 1984. What really makes it stand out are those jaw-dropping mountain views glacial lakes and all these different ecosystems working together. When you're there you'll see why it's globally important - from the stunning Canadian Rockies and massive ice fields to bubbling hot springs and areas where all kinds of wildlife make their home.
Which lesser-known glacial lakes should I check out besides Lake Louise and Moraine Lake?
Peyto Lake is absolutely worth your time with this incredible turquoise water that just doesn't look real. You can get there pretty easily driving along the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper. While you're on that route definitely stop at Bow Lake too - it's right there along the parkway and gives you these amazing views of Bow Glacier you won't want to miss.
I keep hearing about the Rocky Mountaineer - is it really worth taking?
The Rocky Mountaineer's actually an amazing way to see the Rockies in total comfort those glass-dome coaches let you take in everything while you relax. Instead of focusing on driving you get to enjoy really good meals learn about what you're seeing and just soak in the views of mountains forests and rivers. One of our travelers loved the onboard entertainment and learning about First Nations culture. If you're interested the 8-day Canada's Rockies tour (92361) includes two days on the train as part of the experience.
What local cultural experiences can I have in the park and where do I find them?
There's this really cool MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience where you can learn about First Nations Cree Iroquois culture especially around Kananaskis. You'll get to walk through the Boreal Forest with people who really know their stuff learning about traditional plant medicines and the area's history. If you're interested the Classic Canadian Rockies tour (253558) includes an Indigenous Medicine Walk with a Cree guide that's really special.
