Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Picton to Endeavour Inlet

You'll start in Picton with a meeting with your local leader, then catch a ferry out to Meretoto, also called Ship Cove, where Captain James Cook established his base. The hike takes you through native forests thick with ferns, and you get views across Queen Charlotte Sound the whole way. You'll stop at Resolution Bay to eat the lunch you've brought along, then head to Endeavour Inlet where you can try kayaking or paddleboarding if you want, or just relax. After that it's back to your accommodation for the night.

  2. Day 2

    Endeavour Inlet to Punga Cove

This morning you'll wake up to the sounds of the native bush and start hiking along the coast through forest. You'll pass Big Bay and Camp Bay on your way to Punga Cove in the Marlborough Sounds. The settlement there is small and quiet, and there's a local place to grab lunch if you're interested. From there the afternoon is yours to use however you like, whether that's taking a kayak out on the clear water or just hanging around your accommodation's pool area.

  3. Day 3

    Punga Cove to Portage Bay

This is your longest day of walking and also the most scenic. From Punga Cove you head toward Kenepuru Saddle and then climb up to Eatwells Lookout where you get sweeping views of the Marlborough Sounds, Cook Strait, and the Kaikoura Ranges all at once. The descent takes you to Torea Saddle before finishing at Portage Bay. Nearly every step of this walk has coastal views. That evening there's an optional three-course dinner at your hotel restaurant where you can meet up with other hikers on the trip.
