Beijing
Your driver meets you at Beijing airport and takes you to your hotel. The rest of the day is open, so you can either rest after your flight or start wandering the city on your own to get a feel for the place.

- Day 2
Beijing
Head out to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, taking the cable car up to walk this well-preserved part of the wall with views of the watchtowers stretching across the landscape. After lunch, move on to the Temple of Heaven, a Ming and Qing dynasty complex where you'll see locals practicing tai chi and taking in the cultural significance of the space.

Beijing
Start at Tiananmen Square, the massive public area that houses the National Museum of China and the Monument to the People's Heroes. From there, you'll head to the Forbidden City to walk through the palace complex and see 600 years of royal history spread across hundreds of rooms and courtyards. Later in the day, pass by the Bird's Nest and Water Cube from the Olympics, then finish at the Summer Palace where you can walk through the imperial gardens and check out the lakeside architecture.

Beijing to Xi'an
Start with a rickshaw ride through Beijing's hutong neighborhoods, stopping at local shops and cafes to get a real sense of how people live in the city. After that, head to Beijing train station and board a train to Xi'an. When you arrive at Xi'an North Railway Station, your guide meets you and takes you to the Muslim Quarter where there are shops, street food, and Gao's Courtyard puppet show happening. You'll have dinner with local cuisine before heading to your hotel.

- Day 5
Xi'an
Spend the morning at the Terracotta Warriors museum seeing the 8,000 life-size painted warriors and horses that were created for Emperor Qin Shi Huang. In the afternoon, walk or bike along Xi'an's Ancient City Wall, a 14-kilometer stretch with moats, watchtowers, and tunnels still intact. By evening, settle in to watch the Tang Dynasty Show with live music, dance, and poetry from 1,400 years of Chinese royal entertainment.

Xi'an to Shanghai
Begin at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, one of Xi'an's most recognizable landmarks that originally held Buddhist sutras brought from India. Then go to the Archaeological Museum at Hanyangling Mausoleum, the 2,100-year-old tomb of Emperor Jingdi and the only underground museum in China where you can actually walk down into the grave. Later you'll transfer to the airport to fly to Shanghai, where your driver picks you up at Pudong Airport and takes you to your hotel.

- Day 7
Shanghai
Check out the Jade Buddha Temple, a 19th-century structure from the Qing Dynasty with two jade buddha statues inside. You'll learn about jadeite and nephrite and why they matter in Chinese culture at the jade center. After that, head to Zhujiajiao water village on Shanghai's outskirts to walk through ancient buildings and see 36 stone bridges. You can take a canal boat ride if you want to experience it from the water and pick up some souvenirs before returning to your hotel.

Shanghai
Take a guided tour through Yuyuan Garden and Shanghai Old Street, looking at Ming and Qing dynasty statues and ornaments. Participate in a traditional tea ceremony in the garden's halls and around its springs. Then head to Xintiandi in the former French Concession to see 1920s Shikumen architecture, and walk along the Bund waterfront known for its mix of architectural styles and evening lighting. Finish by exploring Lujiazui's financial district with its nearly 100 skyscrapers, and optionally go up to the 100th floor of Shanghai Tower for views across the city.
