Itinerary
- Day 1
Bay of Islands
You'll travel by bus from Sky City Bus Terminal heading north toward the Bay of Islands. Once there, you'll board a catamaran for a water-based adventure out to Cape Brett lighthouse and the famous Hole in the Rock formation. Throughout the journey, keep your eyes open for whales, seals, dolphins, penguins and other marine life passing by. The catamaran ride itself takes a few hours, so bring a camera and dress in layers since ocean conditions can be unpredictable.

- Day 2
Cape Reinga
The day starts with a drive up to Cape Reinga at the North Island's tip. You'll see Ninety Mile Beach (which is actually 55 miles long) and then head off-road to Te Paki Stream where you can try sandboarding down the giant sand dunes. After that, head to Puketi Kauri Forest to walk an elevated pathway through ancient kauri trees that have been standing for centuries. By evening, you'll reach the iconic Cape Reinga lighthouse, positioned right where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet.

Waitangi and Return to Auckland
Start by visiting Waitangi Treaty House, where New Zealand's most important historical moment took place in 1840 when the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and Maori leaders. The grounds also feature the world's largest war canoe, or waka, which is really something to see up close. You'll have time to explore the site thoroughly, then in the afternoon head back to Auckland. This is a fairly long drive, so plan for several hours of travel time.

Departure
