- Day 1
Keflavik to Reykjavik
You'll land at Keflavik Airport and pick up your rental car for the drive to Reykjavik. The route covers about 50 km and takes roughly 45 minutes, so you'll have time to settle into your accommodation and grab dinner in the city before the evening.

- Day 2
Reykjavik to Snaefellsnes Peninsula to Borgarnes
Head out toward the Snaefellsnes peninsula, driving through Borgarnes first. You'll stop at fishing villages like Hellnar and Arnarstapi to see the dramatic coastlines with rock formations and caves. Djupalonssandur's black sand beach comes next, then you'll see Kirkjufell mountain before finishing near Borgarnes. Expect about 410 km and 5 hours of driving today.

- Day 3
Borgarnes to Akureyri
After crossing Walfjord, you'll reach Reykholt to check out the warm water springs, then head to Hraunfossar where waterfalls drop from a lava field into the Hvita river. Later you'll drive north through Skagafjordur, known for Icelandic horses, and end up in Akureyri. Walk through the pedestrian zone and maybe visit the botanical garden if you have time. This day's about 400 km and 5 hours on the road.

Lake Myvatn
Start at Godafoss waterfall with its impressive 10-meter drop and strong volume. Then you'll explore Lake Myvatn's volcanic landscape with lava formations, mud pots, and steaming geothermal areas. The western shore is great for spotting birds if you're interested. Around 240 km and 4 hours of driving, so you can move at a relaxed pace.

Lake Myvatn to Egilsstadir
Drive to Husavik fishing village and visit the whale center. If you want, join a whale watching trip between June and August when you might see up to eleven species. After that, you'll check out the Tjoernes peninsula and hike through Asbyrgi, a horseshoe-shaped rocky gorge. Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall, is on the way to Egilsstadir. Expect 390 km and about 6 hours today.

East Fjords to Höfn
Drive through the East Fjords toward Höfn, passing through fishing villages like Djupivogur where the colorful historic houses make for good photo stops. If you're interested in geology, Petra's Stone Collection in Stöðvarfjörður is worth a detour to see the carefully arranged stone display. The drive takes you along scenic coastal roads with views of the fjords, and you'll end the day settling into Höfn or the Jökulsarlon area for the night.

Jökulsarlon to Kirkjubæjarklaustur - Vik
Start at Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon where blue icebergs drift in the water under Breidamerkurjökull glacier, and you'll likely recognize the landscape from films. After that, head to Diamond Beach to see the ice chunks scattered across the black sand, then drive to Skaftafell National Park for a hike to Svartifoss waterfall surrounded by black basalt columns. You have the option to do a boat tour of the lagoon or join a guided glacier hike if those appeal to you. Finish up in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur or Vik area.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur/Vik to Selfoss
Drive through the moss-covered Eldhraun lava field and across the black sand desert to reach Vik. Stop at Cape Dyrholaey for cliff views up to 120 meters high. Pass Skogafoss waterfall in Skogar, one of Iceland's most popular photo spots. There's an optional visit to the Lava Center with interactive volcano exhibits if that interests you. It's roughly 220 km and 5 hours to Selfoss.

After, drive back to Reykjavik about 220 km in 3 hours. Once there, wander through the harbor district, visit Hallgrims Church, and check out the nightlife at spots like Kaffibarinn or Gaukurinn.
