Itinerary
- Day 1
Ebensee
You'll arrive in Ebensee, an alpine resort town where the Traun River meets Lake Traunsee. This former salt production center has plenty of history to explore, including the Local History Museum and a historical theme trail that walks you through the town's past. After settling in, pick up your travel documents at the hotel and get oriented for the week ahead.

Ebensee to Bad Ischl
Today you'll hike the historic brine pipeline route from Ebensee to Bad Ischl, covering about 19 km through mountain terrain. The trail takes you past Höllenberge cliffs and forests, crosses the Traun River several times, and opens up to views of Katrin mountain as you approach town. When you arrive in Bad Ischl, head to the Salzkammergut Touristik shop to use your 5 euro souvenir voucher.

Bad Ischl to Bad Goisern
From Bad Ischl you'll hike through valleys alongside the turquoise-green Traun River toward Bad Goisern, a former lumberjack settlement. Along the way you'll pass the Katrin cable car station, see the bronze Kaiserjagd statue, and walk through the small town of Lauffen. The mountain views keep expanding as you go, with sightings of the Dachstein Mountains and Krippenstein by the time you reach your destination.

Bad Goisern to Hallstatt
You'll follow the brine pipeline path from Bad Goisern through Steeg and along Lake Hallstatt's eastern shore, where Sarstein mountain rises straight up from the water. There's a suspended footpath section that makes you feel like you're walking right over the lake. Then you'll reach Hallstatt, the village itself. If you want to cut about 8 km of walking, there's an optional boat ride from the train station to the market square.

Hallstatt Departure
Your last morning in Hallstatt gives you time to walk around the village with its shingled houses and half-timbered buildings in pastel colors, all tucked between the mountains and lake. After that, catch a boat from the market square back to the train station, then take the Salzkammergut Railway for your scenic ride back to Ebensee. It's a great route if you like trains and mountain views together.
