Itinerary
- Day 1
Ulaanbaatar to Mongol Els
Your driver picks you up at 8:30am from your Ulaanbaatar hotel and heads west toward Mongol Els. The sand dunes here stretch out with hills, streams, and yellow trees creating quite a landscape. You'll stop at a local nomadic family's ger to see how they live and work day to day. After spending time there, you'll get on a camel to ride through the dunes yourself, which gives you a completely different perspective than walking. By evening you're settled at a ger camp for the night.

Landmarks Mongol Els - Day 2
Mongol Els to Ugii Lake
After breakfast, the drive takes you to Karakorum, the ancient capital where Genghis Khan ruled. First stop is Erdenezuu Monastery in the morning, the oldest Buddhist monastery complex here built back in 1586. The wall surrounding it has 108 stupas, and several temple buildings still stand. You'll walk through the Karakorum museum next to get context about the old Mongol Empire capital and see what remains of it. After lunch, you head out to Ugii Lake, a mountain lake at 1,337m elevation where cranes and ducks live. The area's quiet and the water's quite clear. For the night, you stay at a tourist ger camp right by the lake.

Hustai National Park to Ulaanbaatar
This morning you drive to Hustai National Park, where the Przewalski horse, or Takhi, roams the steppe. These wild horses are unique to Mongolia and you'll see them in their natural setting. After lunch, the Project Information ger center walks you through the Takhi reintroduction effort, which brought the population up to over 220 horses starting from 1992. A guide takes you through the park on foot to spot the horses and get good photos. You'll also see deer and eagles if you're lucky. The drive back to Ulaanbaatar takes a few hours, and you arrive around 7pm.
