Itinerary

  1. Day 2

    Bucharest to Zarnesti

    After meeting your agent at Bucharest North Train Station, you'll collect your documents and maps before boarding the train to Brasov. The journey takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes, and from there you'll transfer to a local train heading to Zarnesti, which is another 50 minutes. If your flight schedule allows, you can stop in Brasov to walk around this medieval city. Once you reach Zarnesti, you'll settle into your guesthouse, have dinner, and spend your first night getting acclimated to the area.

  2. Day 3

    Piatra Craiului Mountains

    This morning you'll start hiking through the Piatra Craiului mountains, heading toward the mountain hut at Curmatura. During the hike, you'll cross through the Zarnesti gorges, which feature impressive 200-meter high vertical walls on either side. Breakfast, a packed lunch for the trail, and dinner are all included for the day. The combination of challenging terrain and scenic gorges makes this a memorable day in the mountains.

  3. Day 4

    Zarnesti to Bran Castle

    Today's trek takes you along a small ridge as you descend toward Bran Castle, a 14th-century fortress originally built to defend against migratory peoples and later used to protect Transylvania from Ottoman invasions. The castle has connections to the Dracula legend, based on Prince Vlad Tepes of Wallachia. After exploring the castle and its surroundings, you'll head back to your guesthouse for the night.

  4. Day 5

    Piatra Craiului National Park to Traditional Mountain Village

    You'll trek through Piatra Craiului National Park heading south along the ridge, passing through pastures, sheepfolds, woodlands, and small scattered villages. This day involves walking through varied terrain and getting a real sense of the mountain landscape and how people live in this region. By evening, you'll arrive at a Romanian traditional mountain village where you'll spend the night.

  5. Day 6

    Traditional Villages to Bucegi Mountains

    An easier hiking day at the foot of the Bucegi mountains takes you through scattered villages with small, ancient houses typical of the area. This region has a long history of livestock breeding and cheese making, so you'll see the traditional way of life as you walk. The landscapes are nice and varied as you make your way to your next guesthouse for the night.

  6. Day 7

    Bucegi Massif Trek

    Today is a longer hike toward the Bucegi massif, and it rewards your effort with great views and landscapes throughout. You'll get spectacular views of the Piatra Craiului's crest from various points along the route. If you prefer a less strenuous day, there's a shorter alternative hike available, so you can choose based on how you're feeling.

  7. Day 8

    Gutanu Meadow

    You'll continue hiking through the Bucegi mountains, walking along the Gutanu meadow and beneath the vertical walls of the Bucegi crest. From June onward, shepherds with their flocks often graze in this area, and you'll have the chance to try locally-prepared cheese if you meet them. Spend time taking in the mountain landscapes and the scale of the terrain around you.

  8. Days 1 - 8

    Return to Bucharest

    A private transfer takes you from the mountains to Brasov, where you'll board the train back to Bucharest. This journey marks the end of your trekking adventure through the Carpathian region and gives you time to reflect on the hiking, the villages, and the mountain life you've experienced over the past week.
