Taiyuan
You'll arrive at Taiyuan airport or the bullet train station and get transferred to your hotel. Take the rest of the day to settle in and get some rest before everything starts tomorrow.

Taiyuan
Your day focuses on Taiyuan's cultural side. You'll visit Jinci Temple with its beautiful architecture, then head to Shanxi Museum to see what's on display. After that, you'll see Mengshan Giant Buddha, a 1600-year-old carving that's quite remarkable for its age and scale.

Taiyuan to Pingyao
After breakfast, you'll drive about 2 hours to Wang Family Courtyard palace. From there, it's another hour to reach Pingyao, a UNESCO-listed old town with well-preserved streets and buildings that give you a real sense of how things looked centuries ago.

Pingyao
Spend your time walking through Pingyao's old town checking out the historic Yamen building, climbing the city wall, and seeing Rishengchang Bank and Confucius Temple. Later in the day, you'll head to nearby Shuangling Temple, which is known for its collection of impressive statues.

Pingyao to Mt Wutai
After breakfast, drive 3 hours to Mt Wutai, a significant Buddhist mountain in the region. You'll visit Foguang Temple and then tackle 1080 steps heading up to Dailuo Ding, where the views of the surrounding area are quite good.

Mt Wutai
This entire day is for exploring Mt Wutai itself. You can climb one of the five summits, and if you're interested, the Dong Summit is the one to aim for if you want to catch sunrise from up there.

Mt Wutai to Datong
You'll travel 3 hours to the Hanging Monastery, which sits on Mt Henshan's cliffs in a way that's quite unusual from an engineering standpoint. Next you'll see the 1000-year-old Wooden Pagoda in Yingxian, and then drive to Datong where you'll stay for the night.

Datong
Datong has several major sites you'll check out today. You'll see Huayan Monastery and the Nine-Dragon Screen, then spend time at the UNESCO-listed Yungang Grottoes with their stone carvings from around 1700 years ago that show incredible detail.
