La Tomatina 2022 - This was a bucket lister for me. My wife and I carried out a fair bit of research and went with PP Travel. Absolutely fantastic experience and a great company to do business with. From the personal phone calls to ensure I was happy with everything to the quality of the hotel we stayed in. The event did not disappoint nor did PP Travel.

The actual event was a fun time. Although, I was a bit let down by the overall experience. The 'parties' were a total bust so it seems like the whole cost was for organization of the lodging and buses to the event. I've traveled with other tour groups that seemed to have a much greater interest in the tour participants, especially those traveling solo. I found several female travelers traveling solo that bluntly asked if they could follow me since they didn't know anyone else and were headed to a crowd of 20,000+. No tips or advice for navigating in the event or how to get back to the busses. And answers given to specific questions asked in the briefing were not what happened the day of. I also heard one participant mention people taking things that didn't below to them from below the buss but the PP staff brushed it off and walked off. Even sending the follow up email asking for reviews, was sent over 2 weeks after the event took place so it maybe these aren't full time jobs for the staff at PP? But if you're looking for a company that has transportation and lodging coordinated, this would be a fit for you.

Be aware that being with PP there is only 1 entrance you can gain entrance to Tomatina on the day and it is quite out of the way and difficult to find. We took an hour to eventually find it with another group that was lost as they had a friend who could guide us in on their phone! Also we left the after party at 2am and there were no taxis and we couldn’t find one to come and collect us. The coach arrived eventually so that was our only option as it was a very remote location.

I really enjoyed La Tomatina and thought that PP Travel did a good job overall and would recommend. The hotel was nice--located right near the arts & sciences museums with their impressive modern architecture, and a short cab ride to the beach in one direction and to the historic center of town in another direction. The overall tomatina experience was intense, but fun! I know I'm not the typical tomatina participant since I'm a bit older. (Most participants seemed to be in their 20s and 30s, but there were enough middle-aged people at the festival that I didn't feel out of place.) But here are some suggestions for what I think could be done better, and also tips for anyone going in subsequent years. One big disappointment I have is that I don't have any photos to show for it. The guides strongly discouraged us from taking our phones, so my sister and I followed their advice. We were told that we COULD buy phone cases, but it wasn't recommended. In retrospect, I wish I had brought my camera and purchased a plastic case from any one of the countless vendors trying to sell them. Although we were pelted hard with a lot of tomatoes where we were, I think with a plastic phone case and the phone tucked under my shirt during the tomato-throwing, it probably would've been fine. Sure, there was a chance it could've taken a direct hit with an aggressively thrown tomato (of which there were many), but probably not. But if we really didn't want to risk damaging our phones, ideally, one of the PP travel guides could've stayed out of the fray and been the designated photographer, who could post the images to a photo-sharing site to be downloaded later. If that person had stood (maybe with a PP flag?) at a designated location, he/she could've captured the tour-goers in their epic tomato-covered glory. :-) So I hope that's something PP Travel would consider for next year's event. It also might've been nice to have had some kind of crude map of the town and where the activities would take place. Even though a paper map would be useless after everyone was soaked in water and tomatoes and water again, it could've been helpful before--I would've liked to have checked out the main town square where the ham-pole was, but I didn't have an idea where to find it. A map printed on cloth/kerchief could've been useful throughout the day and could've also made a nice souvenier (just a suggestion). Trying to find our way back from Tomato Street to the bus was difficult until some helpful Canadians told us to follow a blue line spray painted in the street--it's possible our guides told us that and we missed it, but that definitely would've been good information to know. Another thing I would've liked to have known was that there was a baggage check right by the entrance. If we had known that, we would've held onto our things for longer and then checked them in closer to tomato-throwing time instead of having them locked on the bus the whole time. My sister has type-1 diabetes, so it was stressful to be away from her testing kit/insulin for so long. It would've been nicer to have known there was a different option. The area near where the buses were parked and near the bag-check area seemed to have the same sangria/beer/paella/sandwich options as what was available down at the official pre-party area, so I wouldn't have felt like I was missing out if we hadn't gone down to that. One other suggestion I would have would be to consider cutting down on the amount of time we were in Bunol. Three hours is a long time to wait in the sun before the event--it might've been nicer to have had at least a half-hour more sleep that morning. And I think 90% of our bus was full at least a half-hour before we were scheduled to leave--at that point most people were tired and smelly and just wanted to get home, shower the regurtitated-looking and smelling tomatoes out of our hair and take a siesta. I think the designated time to return to the bus/take off could've been set a little earlier without taking away from everyone's experience. I hope my suggestions are helpful. Again, (despite my long-winded comments above) I think PP travel and their guides overall did a great job and I had a lot of fun!

The whole experience was very organised and extremely fun! Only advise if you are going to ride out the fight near the ham pole, either get past it or be on the side of the street with the pole. I was on the other side of the street and when the trucks were coming we were squashed against the wall six people deep.

Thanks for your comments Clare. Great to hear you enjoyed your time in Valencia and at La Tomatina. It sure is busy down round the pole where the ham is. You are correct that it can be a little less busy at the far ends of the street.

Is there a way of pickup from an airport?

    • PP TravelOperatorWritten March 2023

We do not organise airport transfers, but you can book one independently via local taxi service for around €35 one way. Valencia airport is close to central Valencia and the location of the hotels. Travel time is roughly 20 minutes. We always take a taxi from outside of the airport for the journey from airport to hotel.

    Asked on May 23rd, 2022

Could i get some more detail on what time does the fight end and what happens after it? Also what time does the bus transport us back from Bunol to accommodations in Valencia? I'm planning on catching a 2am flight to athens on the 1st Sep meaning I would have to be back and ready to go on the 31st around midnight. What transport options would be available at that time? Would it be easy to catch a taxi at midnight or I assume I could catch the last train at around 11pm.

    • PP TravelOperatorWritten May 2022

There is usually nothing on after the tomato fight so it is back the coaches and back to Valencia. We are normally back to at the hotel by mid/early afternoon. So you would be back in plenty of time for your flight. Taxi is the quickest and easiest way to get to the airport.

    • K

      Karen

      TravelerWritten June 2022

Would you be able to help organise a taxi for the night of the 31st so I can catch a taxi at midnight? My main concern is if there aren't any taxis available at that hour, could that be the case? if the afterparty is at the same venue, would it be possible to catch a taxi from there to make my flight or would i most likely have to chose to not go?

    • PP TravelOperatorWritten June 2022

Not something we are able to book but it is something that the hotel could book for you when you arrive. The venue for the After Party has not yet been confirmed. The last years it has been outside of Valencia at a place it would be hard to organise a taxi pickup. It may end up somewhere in Valencia which would be easy for a taxi at any time of night.
