Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Iquitos to Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Your adventure kicks off with an early pickup from your Iquitos location, whether that's your hotel or the airport. You'll drive about 1 hour and 45 minutes south to reach Nauta, where a private boat is waiting. From there, you head upriver for 3 hours through the landscape, keeping your eyes open for river dolphins, herons, and turtles along the way. After stopping at the Santo Domingo checkpoint to register, it's another 30 minutes to Buenos Aires community. Once you arrive, you'll walk through the primary jungle, then later join a nocturnal hike to look for spiders, snakes, frogs, and other night-active wildlife.

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve Jungle Exploration

This day starts before sunrise so you can watch the rainforest come alive, then you're searching for monkeys and sloths. The Pucate river calls next, and you'll spend about 3 hours in a canoe going deeper into primary jungle. After that, local guides teach you artisanal piranha fishing with all equipment provided. You'll swim with pink and gray dolphins in the river, then walk to see the massive Lupuna tree. Later, you head to Iricahua lake about 2 to 3 hours on foot, where woolly monkeys, howler monkeys, and Paiche fish live. Evening brings a nocturnal expedition hunting for white and black caimans, and you'll sleep in the jungle that night.
