What people love about touring Southern France solo
- The French Riviera - Monaco-Monte Carlo, Cannes, Nice, Antibes
Just had a trip around Nice, France and Monaco and it was an absolutely incredible experience: - for me the best part of the trip is the walking trip in the old town of Nice with aristocratically built houses. The artistic architecture of the buildings like town hall, fountain or cathedrals and the detailed carved statues and sculptures was simply a mesmerizing sightseeing. Apart from that, one can also find themselves hypnotized in narrow, steep alleys surrounded by colourful tall houses. This is really a place for someone who loves taking picturesque photos of old time European buildings, or for someone who just wants to escape from the city life. - also to mention is that Nice has a really lovely and beautiful beach with crystal clear water. With the nice warm sunny weather, one could really enjoy swimming in the water there for hours. The bonus part of this is there is an old castle on the hill located just near the beach, from where one can take a panorama picture of the blue water beach on one side and the red tiled roofs of nearby houses on the other side, separated in the middle by a curvy road. - the walking tour around Monaco was absolutely amazing as well. My tour was guided by a really professional and well organizing British and he showed us a lot of sightseeing in Monaco, from an old classic castle with an old town nearby, aquarium museum, cathedral, casino to the bay with lots of majestic, shinny yachts docked in there. - Nice as well as Monaco also have markets that offer really nice and exquisite street food like sanwiches with ham and melting cheese or patisserie like a small but fine cheese cake with vanilla flavour. - and the hostel room (in Nice, France) was absolutely a comfortable and clean and quiet place to stay at the end of the day after the long, tired walking trip. Bonus part about the hostel is that they also have a really nice and cozy student-bar in the ground floor with lots of games like billiard, darts, table tennis, where everyone, especially young people can meet up there and have a conversation. I find it a really good place to meet and get to know new people and learn about the french culture. All in one, this is a really good trip for someone who would like to embrace the old European aristocratic architecture and take home lots of beautiful pictures of buildings, beaches, etc. or just want to enjoy a day at a beautiful beach. I personally would love to visit both places here again because there are still many things yet for me to discover! DN
- Stunning French Riviera
The hotel was in a trendy location and the hotel/airport transfers went well. It would have been nice to have spent more time in Eze and Menton. Also, the tours should have been split up so that the English speaking people were in one group and the French speaking people were in another group instead of combining them so that everything had to be said in both languages. For the most part though a nice vacation.
What our customers ask about Southern France Tours for Solo Travelers
Which areas of Southern France are most welcoming for solo travelers?
The French Riviera region stands out as a natural fit for solo travel with Nice Aix-en-Provence and Avignon leading the way. These cities offer well-lit streets compact city centers and a established tourism infrastructure that makes independent exploration straightforward. Central accommodations such as the Mercure Avignon Gare TGV place visitors within walking distance of main attractions restaurants and transportation hubs. The local attitude toward solo travelers is notably welcoming as evidenced by one TourRadar reviewer: "Nice was perfect as a solo traveler - I felt completely comfortable exploring the old town and promenade on my own during free time."
How much free time is typically available for solo exploration on guided tours?
Tour schedules generally provide 2-3 hours of independent exploration each day particularly in larger cities. When staying at properties like the Renaissance La Défense in Paris guests can easily venture out on their own between organized activities. The flexibility allows for personal discoveries while maintaining the structure of guided experiences. As one TourRadar traveler shared: "I appreciated having mornings free to wander the markets of Provence at my own pace before joining afternoon group activities."
Which Southern France tours have the highest percentage of solo travelers?
Culinary and wine-focused expeditions throughout Provence and Beaujolais consistently draw the highest numbers of independent travelers comprising 40-50% of tour groups. The Food and Wine in a French Chateau tour is particularly notable with solo travelers making up 67% of participants. One TourRadar participant observed "There were 6 other solo travelers in my group of 12 - we bonded instantly over our shared love of French cuisine and wine." Cultural tours along the French Riviera also attract significant numbers of solo participants.
What's the best time of year for solo travelers to visit Southern France?
The periods between high and low seasons (April-May or September-October) offer the most balanced experience for solo visitors. These months bring mild temperatures and smaller crowds at major destinations. Booking data shows September as the most popular month among solo travelers. A recent TourRadar review noted "Traveling in May was perfect - the weather was warm but not too hot for sightseeing and accommodations like Hotel Regina in Avignon were less crowded." Peak summer months typically bring higher single supplement charges and crowded attractions.
What dining arrangements are made for solo travelers on Southern France tours?
Tour packages include daily breakfast and several shared dinners at establishments like the Château de Cruix in Beaujolais. For meals not included tour leaders often coordinate optional group dining experiences or direct solo travelers to welcoming local spots. According to one TourRadar participant "Even when dinner wasn't included most of us chose to eat together - though there was never pressure if you wanted to do your own thing." Many accommodations including Hotel du Poete in Fontaine de Vaucluse maintain on-site restaurants suited to single diners.
What type of accommodations can solo travelers expect?
Lodging typically consists of 3-4 star hotels and local properties such as Hotel Les Esclargies in Rocamadour and Villa Romaine in Carsac-Aillac. Tours offer two options: paying a single supplement for private accommodations or sharing space with another solo traveler of the same gender to avoid extra charges. A TourRadar participant noted "The hotels were varied but all wonderful the staff friendly and the accommodations were basic but comfortable."
