Exploring Svalbard
Seven days of exploration by ship and Zodiac. Your route will depend on weather and ice conditions but typically includes: - 14th July Glacier where you can spot seals on ice floes - Smeerenburg's historic whaling station - Alkefjellet's cliffs filled with Brünnich's guillemots - Phippsøya for potential polar bear sightings - Hinlopen Strait where walruses gather on shore You'll need waterproof boots and rain gear for Zodiac trips. Bring binoculars since wildlife spotting often happens at a distance. The constant daylight gives you plenty of time to look for animals.
- Day 10
Return to Helsinki
10 Day Finland & Sweden Itinerary, incl. Helsinki and Stockholm
Finnish culture and nature blend across 10 days and 7 destinations, from Helsinki's urban core to Nuuksio's wilderness and UNESCO-listed Rauma. Guided city tours, forest hikes, and cultural experiences at Stallhagen brewery and traditional Finnish saunas create a comprehensive overview.
- Days 1-2
Helsinki & Nuuksio National Park
Start with an evening walking tour of Helsinki to get your bearings. On day two visit Nuuksio National Park just 40 minutes from the city for forest hiking. Visit Allas Sea Pool sauna complex in late afternoon when locals finish work. You'll need flip-flops and should book your sauna slot ahead of time. Note that Helsinki's metro is reliable but stops running at 11:30 PM.
- Days 3-4
Southwest Finland
Take a drive to Hanko Peninsula for a 6km coastal walk along Baltic shores. The path takes about 2 hours and you'll need good shoes since rocks can be slippery in wet weather. Visit historic Turku to see its riverside area, 13th-century cathedral and medieval castle. Make time for the UNESCO-listed Sammallahdenmaki burial site and the wooden town of Rauma. You'll find most restaurants in Turku along the Aura River. Try the local archipelago fish soup if it's in season.
- Days 5-6
Åland Islands
Take the 5.5-hour ferry through the Archipelago Sea with its 50,000 islands to reach Mariehamn. Explore the maritime capital before hiking the Grottstigen Cave Trails. The terrain is manageable but rocky with some steep parts. Hiking poles will come in handy. Visit Stallhagen brewery and medieval Kastelholm Castle. The Åland Islands are part of Finland but Swedish-speaking which adds interesting cultural variety.
- Days 7-8
Stockholm Introduction
The 4.5-hour ferry ride through Stockholm's archipelago offers great views. Sit on the port side as you enter Stockholm for the best city views. Spend time exploring Gamla Stan's medieval streets and visit City Hall where they hold the Nobel banquet. Plan at least 2 hours for the Vasa Museum and get there when it opens at 10 AM to avoid cruise ship crowds.
- Days 9-10
Stockholm & Archipelago
- Day 1
Helsinki Arrival
- Day 2
Helsinki Exploration
Start early with the Hop-on-Hop-off bus. Visit Senate Square before 10 AM to avoid cruise ship crowds. Visit the Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church) between 1-3 PM when sunlight fills the copper dome interior. Bring a light jacket even in summer as the underground church stays cool. Finish at Uspenski Cathedral. Take 30 minutes to walk up the steep hill for great harbor views.
- Day 3
Helsinki Archipelago & Turku Transfer
Take the 90-minute morning canal cruise from Market Square. Pick a seat on the port side to see Suomenlinna Fortress. Later catch the train to Turku (3 hours). The trains have good WiFi and dining cars but pack some snacks since Finnish train food costs quite a bit. Stay at Sokos Hotel Kupittaa for easy access to both the station and downtown.
- Day 4
Turku Archipelago
Spend the day in Finland's oldest city. You can take a 7-hour kayaking tour through Turku's archipelago if you like adventure. Book at least 2 days ahead in summer and bring quick-dry clothes. You'll paddle about 12-15 km through scattered islands. If that's not your style walk along the medieval Aura River path which gets particularly lively on summer evenings.
- Day 5
Turku Castle & Tampere Transfer
- Day 6
Tampere Highlights
Try the 2-hour morning sauna tour for a real Finnish experience. First-timers should know it's traditionally done nude with separate areas for men and women. Visit the Näsinneula tower after 4 PM when most tourists have left. The rotating restaurant at 124 meters shows off amazing sunset views across the lakes.
