What people love about Train & Rail Tours in Mediterranean
- Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan: signature (4* hotels) low carbon tour by train
We liked the fact that all the arrangements were made for us without much hassle. Itinerary was good. But my husband did not go for the Sistine Chapel tour which I would like to ask for a refund. And there were two tours that were booked only for 2 persons instead of 3. These were the tours to Pisa and the Milan Duomo but the tour agents were kind enough to add one more. The one tour that went wrong was the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum tour. The tour starts at 4pm. The voucher does state to 'Please arrive 30 min prior to departure'. We were there at 3.45pm and the person, Hussein at the counter told us we were late and the tour had left. Another couple who were African descent that arrived after us was also told the same. He said we could get a refund. We were infuriated! An Italian guide tried to solve the problem by asking us to join the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum tour at 5.15pm giving us directions at where to meet. Then return the next day for the Colosseum tour. We agreed reluctantly because we have a Vatican City, Sistine Chapel tour as well which would be tiring for us. The Palatine Hill and Roman Forum tour guided by Eliana was a big group of 50 over people apparently she had to take two groups because another guide did not show up. There was no audio guides for us so we could not hear her and it was just a pure waste of time. The next day, we returned to the same office on Via del Monte Oppio 10 which I must say is not an easy place to find uphill and downhill. There is no visible sign to indicate the place. My husband who cannot walk fast because of leg problems decided to skip this tour and the Vatican City tour because he did not want to come back again to the same place. This time we were there at 3.25pm for the 4pm tour. An Italian lady told us to wait as the tour would start at 4pm. An American family of three came in at 3.50pm, the lady told them to wait till 4pm. She then told us at 4pm to follow her, locked up the office and took us to the meeting point at the Colosseum. I could not believe why this could not be done the day before???? This American family could join the tour when they joined us at 3.50pm!!! It is completely ludicrous and outrageous!!!! We were there before 4pm and we could not join it! We are so disappointed with the service here! Fortunately we had another day in Rome to rejoin the tour but the inconvenience of returning where we could have spent the time going somewhere else.

Thanks meet& greet for booking hotels at great locations!! Booking our tours and trains!! But the only thing that we missed was guidance to how and which transportation to take to our hotels after we landed in that city.
- Italy By Train
Our tour included a 2 day rail pass for Cinque Terre for a party of four, but it turns out what we received was only good for one day. We found this out when our tickets were checked by an official from TrenItalia. As a result we were each fined 55 Euros, plus we were required to purchase a ticket back to La Spezia. I have contacted Wingbuddy, but their after sales service is abysmal. They appear to be seriously understaffed. They no longer answer the phone for existing reservations, and they don't accept voicemail messages. As a result you need to send them an email, and it typically takes several days to get a response. This incident happened on Sept. 19, and as of Oct. 1 it has not been resolved. To date, I have received one email that says this will require investigation. While the rest of the experience was good, the poor customer service makes me very hesitant to recommend them.
What our customers ask about Train & Rail Tours in Mediterranean
What are the most popular stops along Mediterranean train routes?
The journey connects Europe's most notable cities through scenic rail lines. Venice draws visitors to its waterways and St. Mark's Square while Florence presents Renaissance art at the Duomo and Uffizi Gallery. Rome's ancient sites include the Colosseum and Vatican City. Along the Amalfi Coast travelers find the seaside towns of Positano and Sorrento. The northern route leads to Milan's Gothic Cathedral and Lake Como. According to one TourRadar traveler: "The locations of the hotels were ideal in each city allowing us to easily explore major attractions between train journeys. The Hotel Continental in Venice and Hotel Home in Florence were particularly well-situated." Less frequented stops include San Gimignano with its medieval towers and the coastal villages of Cinque Terre.
What's the best time of year for train travel in the Mediterranean?
The Mediterranean rail system is most pleasant during spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) when temperatures are mild and tourist numbers decrease. The Cinque Terre region works particularly well in May or September for hiking between villages. Summer brings intense heat with temperatures often reaching 40°C in cities like Rome and Madrid. Winter stays relatively mild across most regions making year-round travel possible. One TourRadar traveler recommended: "We did our rail journey through Italy in late September - perfect weather for both sightseeing and train travel plus the summer crowds had thinned out."
How long are typical Mediterranean train tours?
Rail tours through the Mediterranean region run between 4 and 11 days. Most travelers choose 7-8 day itineraries. The Dolomites by Train tour takes 8 days to explore Northern Italy while Spain's Al Andalus luxury train extends to 11 days. Quick trips like the Naples Express & Sorrento tour complete in 4 days. Most itineraries allow 2-3 nights in major cities such as Rome Florence and Barcelona. A TourRadar traveler reviewing a 7-day Italian rail journey mentioned: "The pacing was perfect - enough time in each city to see the main sights while enjoying the scenic train rides between destinations."
What's typically included in Mediterranean rail tour packages?
Standard packages cover first or second-class train tickets hotel stays at 3-4 star properties like Hotel Firenze & Continentale in La Spezia or Palazzo Salgar in Naples daily breakfast and guided tours at major sites. Many tours add special touches such as wine tastings in Italy's Asti region or boat excursions along the Amalfi Coast. Entrance fees to main attractions and museums come included. Ground transfers between stations and hotels vary by package. As noted by a TourRadar traveler: "Our package included excellent centrally-located hotels comfortable train travel and knowledgeable local guides in each city."
How much luggage can I bring on Mediterranean train tours?
Mediterranean trains set limits at one large suitcase (maximum 23kg/50lbs) and one carry-on per passenger. Space constraints exist particularly on regional trains throughout Italy and Spain. Hotels such as the Grand Hotel Vesuvio in Sorrento provide luggage storage options. A TourRadar traveler advised: "Pack as lightly as possible since you'll be carrying your bags on and off trains and up hotel stairs. One medium suitcase and a daypack worked perfectly for our 8-day tour through Italy."
What are the most scenic train routes in Mediterranean?
The rail line from Venice to Florence reveals the rolling Tuscan landscape while the Naples to Sorrento connection offers views along the Amalfi Coast. The historic Red Train (Train Rouge) crosses the Pyrenees between Rivesaltes and Axat showing mountain vistas. As one TourRadar traveler noted "The train travel was incredible offering amazing views of the Italian countryside that you just can't get by car." Properties like the NH Collection Murano Villa in Venice and Hotel Alpha in Sorrento serve as convenient bases for these rail journeys.
