This trip was my first Contiki and was a little hesitant at first, as I have lived and travelled around Europe quite a bit on my own. I have to say I was blown away and this absolutely exceeded my expectations. I don't know about other tours but our Tour Manager Ben and our driver Miki were the absolute best team, bar none. 9 days on a bus with 38 strangers with late nights, early mornings and little sleep sounds like a recipe for disaster but rather it ended up being one of the best travel and life experiences I've had, to date. Full stop. Thank you not only to Ben and Miki, but to all the fellow 2016 Contiki Med Quest crew... You are all gems and I am so glad I have the pleasure of meeting and getting to know all of you. Hope we keep in touch and see you all (I hope) for the Contiki 2K17 reunion in Straya (Australia)!!!! #Ilived #Ididitall #Noregrets

Best time to visit France, Italy and Spain
- Spring 2026
Spring Mediterranean tours have perfectly balanced routes through France, Italy and also Spain. Our travelers love discovering cultural paths from Rome to Lisbon in this season, when the Cinque Terre villages welcome hikers without summer crowds, and Barcelona's markets offer intimate cooking workshops. The experiences go beyond sightseeing - you'll craft perfumes on the French Riviera and taste wines in Chianti vineyards just as the countryside bursts into bloom. Vatican Museums and ancient Roman sites become far more comfortable to explore in spring temperatures, with noticeably shorter lines at major attractions. What makes these tours special is how our customers connect with local communities - learning traditional tapas in small Barcelona kitchens, discovering Venice's quiet back canals, or joining family cooking classes in Tuscany. Train journeys between destinations showcase Mediterranean coastlines and countryside vistas, while spring's mild climate makes outdoor activities like coastal walks in Nice and market visits in Florence particularly pleasant.

- Summer 2026
Our Mediterranean summer tours stretch 15 to 16 days with plenty of outdoor activities built in. The Rome to Lisbon coastal route gets great feedback - you'll hike between the Cinque Terre villages and join local families for cooking classes in Barcelona. Lots of our travelers love the Paris-Switzerland-Italy journey that includes a Lake Zurich boat trip and takes you up to Lyon's Notre-Dame de Fourvière by cable car. There's also this really good cultural route combining Madrid's art galleries, French Riviera beaches and Rome's historic areas. Summer means you can dive into activities like scuba in Nice and walks through Provence when the lavender is in full bloom.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
The Mediterranean really comes into its own during autumn with fewer crowds and ideal temperatures for exploring. Travelers consistently book our 13-15 day routes through France, Italy and Spain this time of year, drawn to experiences that go beyond basic sightseeing. You'll work alongside locals, kneading fresh pasta dough at Tuscan farms, crafting traditional masks in Venetian workshops and preparing tapas in Barcelona's bustling markets. Our rail journeys linking London, Paris, Barcelona and Rome give you a perfect mix of structure and freedom, with wine tastings in centuries-old cellars and seasonal food festivals adding local flavor. Customers tell us how much they enjoy hiking between colorful villages in Cinque Terre, learning perfume-making on the French Riviera and joining cooking workshops in Florence. The autumn timing means deeper connections with locals - whether you're exploring Monaco's elegant streets, discovering hidden canals in Venice or chatting with vendors at morning markets.

How long should I plan to really experience these countries?
Two weeks gives you a good taste of the major spots but three weeks? That's when you can really breathe and explore. Some travelers go for a full month to really get into local life. Our Mediterranean Flavors tour runs 14 days and hits that sweet spot balancing Spain France and Italy without feeling rushed. You get to see everything important while still having time to actually enjoy it.
Where can I find real local experiences away from tourist crowds?
You'll love Girona which we feature in our Magical Barcelona France and Italy tour - it's got this incredible authentic Catalan vibe. Then there's Arles where Van Gogh found his inspiration it really shows you true Provençal life. Collioure's this gorgeous artistic town right on the French-Spanish border that most tourists miss. These places still have all the culture but without the crowds you get at major attractions.
What local food absolutely can't I miss and where do I find it?
In Spain you've got to try authentic paella in Valencia - the saffron rice is incredible. Barcelona's tapas scene is amazing for trying lots of small dishes especially at local bars. Our London to Rome tour folks loved learning to make tapas themselves in Barcelona. Italy's all about regional pasta - try Roman carbonara or Cinque Terre's pesto trofie. And France? Get ready for amazing cheese boards and regional wines that'll blow your mind.
