What people love about Bicycle Tours in Africa
- Cycle Morocco
The trip was fantastic. It was really educational, fun and definately worth the time I spent in Morocco. I am so glad I went.
- Cycling the Cape & Winelands
Cycling in the Western Cape offers climbing (& descending) mountain passes, riding through semi-arid deserts and along windy coastal roads. Both the distances and level of difficulty vary day-to-day. Regardless each day starts early. Each day included some time in the van. There were times when cyclists and bikes were transferred in the truck when the roadway and shoulder looked invitingly cyclable. There also several times when the transfer backtracked over the route ridden the previous day. The quality of the accommodations varied from modern, clean and efficient to quirky and - in one case - dangerous. There was no access to laundry during the 10 days. The food options varied from sandwich picnics at the side of the road to white tablecloths. There was always water; there were snacks of fruit and sweets at breaks in the cycling journeys.

Thanks for a nice experience!
What our customers ask about Bicycle Tours & Trips in Africa
What are the top cycling routes in Africa for scenery and adventure?
The standout cycling routes in Africa include the 360° Kilimanjaro circuit in Tanzania which takes riders through rainforests and savannas and the Cape Winelands route in South Africa with its coastal roads including Chapman's Peak and the Franschhoek Pass. "Cycling Chapman's Peak coastal road is surely one of the best coastal rides ever with breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean" reports one TourRadar traveler. The Northern Tanzania circuit connecting Kilimanjaro to Ngorongoro Crater lets cyclists pedal past wildlife areas and Maasai settlements while keeping Africa's highest mountain in view.
What kind of accommodation can I expect on African cycling tours?
The range spans from well-appointed lodges to safari-style tented camps with unique touches at each stop. Tanzania offers properties like the Salinero Hotel in Moshi and Snowcap Cottages near Kilimanjaro while South African routes feature places like San Gabriel Homestead in Stellenbosch and the historic Karoo Art Hotel in Barrydale. One TourRadar traveler notes: "The standard of accommodation throughout the trip was very high - mostly 3-star B&Bs and lodges but every place had its own character."
How long are the daily cycling distances on African tours?
Routes typically cover between 30-90km each day. The Cape Winelands tour averages 50-70km daily with occasional 90km stretches along coastal sections. On the Tanzania Kilimanjaro to Ngorongoro route cyclists cover between 43-102km per day with the longest section from Arusha to Tarangire. A TourRadar traveler shares: "The distances were challenging but achievable with options to use the support vehicle if needed."
What wildlife might I encounter while cycling in Africa?
The northern circuit of Tanzania offers frequent wildlife sightings. Routes near Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara regularly feature elephants giraffes zebras and various antelope species. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area provides chances to spot the "Big Five." According to a TourRadar traveler: "Cycling through wildlife corridors between Tarangire and Lake Manyara provided incredible opportunities to safely observe animals in their natural habitat."
What's the best time of year for cycling in Africa?
Ideal timing depends on location. For Kilimanjaro routes plan for dry seasons (January-March and June-October). The Atlas Mountains of Morocco work best in spring (March-May) or fall (September-November). Zambia welcomes cyclists year-round but offers peak conditions in dry season (May-October). TourRadar travelers report: "The spring weather in Morocco was perfect for cycling - warm days and cool evenings."
What type of accommodation can I expect on an African cycling tour?
Options range from lodges to authentic camping setups. Tanzania features spots like Lake Burunge Tented Camp near Tarangire and Migunga Tented Camp by Lake Manyara. Morocco's Atlas Mountains offer traditional riads such as Riad Oussagou in Imlil and mountain gites in villages like Tigmi Tamazirt. As one TourRadar traveler puts it: "The hospitality and combination of camping under stars and staying in local gites made the experience truly unique and memorable."
