We experienced so many aspects of this fascinating region of Patagonia. Engrossing and stimulating. The trip was varied, well-paced and brilliantly organized. It's the first time we've been with Guide Ecuador, which says everything about their efficiency, friendliness and organizational skills.

Patagonia is truly an amazing place with great scenery unrivalled anywhere else in the world. It has a very unique flora and fauna and scenery in this part of the world. This trip has given me the opportunity to meet people from different of the world. Our tour guide had very good organisational skills and all our needs were met. He had also provided the group with lots of information regarding Patagonia making our trip very educational.

Looking at the Patagonia tour operators, Wanderful Holidays and OneSeed emerge as the top choices based on actual traveler experiences. Wanderful Holidays gets consistently good feedback for how they handle all the details - from sorting out transport logistics and accommodation to keeping travelers well-informed throughout their trips.OneSeed really shines with their small-group treks. Their guides know both the popular trails and hidden spots, plus they've found some unique places to stay that you wouldn't typically find on standard tours. Our travelers particularly like how personal these trips feel, since you're not just following the crowd.Exodus and TourRadar sit somewhere in the middle. While many of their customers have good experiences, we've heard about some hiccups with communication and cases where the actual trip didn't quite match what was advertised. These aren't deal-breakers, but worth keeping in mind when you're choosing.I'd suggest steering clear of Unu Raymi Expeditions for now. Multiple travelers have reported issues with poor organization, spotty communication and trips that didn't deliver what was promised in the brochure. When you're planning something as complex as a Patagonia trip, you really need an operator you can count on.

Where to start your Patagonia trip
Most of our Patagonia journeys start from Buenos Aires which offers 24 different departure options throughout the season. El Calafate comes in as another popular kickoff point with 23 tour starts, while Puerto Natales - your gateway to Torres del Paine - gives you 15 different options to begin your trip. Ushuaia, Punta Arenas and some other cities round out the starting points with 9 and 6 tours respectively. Since prime spots fill up quickly, booking about 100 days ahead makes sense - this helps lock in your preferred dates and lodging, particularly during the busy summer months from December through February. The sweet spot for visiting falls between November and March when the weather's kinder and days stretch longer. Mid-November to mid-December is particularly nice with spring flowers blooming and fewer tourists around, plus you get great conditions for photos and hiking. While you can see the highlights in 7-10 days, many of our travelers stay longer to really sink into the wilderness experience and work around Patagonia's ever-changing weather patterns.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter transforms Patagonia into something special, with our customers consistently highlighting their favorite experiences. The Buenos Aires to Ushuaia journey connects city life in the capital with raw glacier exploration in the south. Our travelers tell us how guides adapt seamlessly to winter conditions, particularly around El Calafate, where Perito Moreno Glacier puts on spectacular ice formations. Santiago serves as another excellent starting point, with tours weaving through Torres del Paine using carefully timed stops that work with weather patterns - our guides know precisely when to move and when to pause for incoming weather. The winter Argentina-Chile combination tours include smart buffer days around key sites like French Valley, Grey Glacier and other notable spots. The smaller groups in winter mean more individual attention from guides Marina and Seba, who get specific praise from customers for their expertise in helping everyone handle the demanding winter landscape.

- Spring 2026
Spring in Patagonia offers ideal conditions for exploring the diverse terrain. Our small groups head into Torres del Paine on well-marked paths, where you'll cross swaying bridges and make your way up to Windy Pass - our travelers often tell us how good the cold gusts feel after the climb up. We've designed tours that connect El Calafate's glacier experiences with El Chalten's trail network, so you can see both the massive ice sheets and mountain peaks in one trip. The guided walks to Laguna de los Tres showcase Mount Fitz Roy surrounded by spring flowers, while boat excursions take you right up to the active Perito Moreno Glacier. Many tours start in Buenos Aires, giving you time to wander through La Boca's painted streets and San Telmo's historic quarter before heading to Patagonia.

- Summer 2026
Summer opens every Patagonian trail and possibility. Our most-booked tours mix time in Santiago or Buenos Aires with extended stays in Torres del Paine, where summer's long daylight hours let you really dig into the hiking trails. The mixed tours that combine French Valley treks with Grey Glacier visits are customer favorites, including nights at local refugios along the route. Summer also brings fantastic penguin watching at Martillo Island - you'll walk right beside the colonies while local experts share their wildlife knowledge. For a complete southern experience, several tours continue to Ushuaia with Beagle Channel sailing and also hiking through Tierra del Fuego National Park.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Patagonia offers two perfect autumn routes that our travelers consistently choose. The first blends city and wilderness, starting in Buenos Aires before heading to Torres del Paine, where paths lead across suspended bridges and up to Windy Pass, opening up to crystal-clear mountain lakes. Many visitors opt for the route linking El Calafate's glacier experiences with El Chalten's trail system, which puts you face-to-face with both massive ice formations and dramatic peaks in a single trip. The guided walks to Laguna de los Tres showcase Mount Fitz Roy, framed beautifully by autumn foliage, while boat trips bring you directly to the active wall of Perito Moreno Glacier. Both journeys typically begin in Buenos Aires, giving travelers time to wander through La Boca's vibrant painted streets, San Telmo's historic district and also the city's cultural landmarks before venturing into Patagonia's untamed landscapes.

What's the best time to visit Patagonia?
You know, Patagonia's really amazing year-round but your perfect time really depends on what you want to do there. Summer runs December through February and that's when you'll get those lovely warm days and tons of daylight perfect for hiking Torres del Paine or checking out Perito Moreno Glacier. If you're into gorgeous colors autumn's your season from March to May the whole landscape just explodes with color. Winter's actually pretty special from June to August you can hit the slopes and there's way fewer tourists around. Spring's beautiful too September to November brings out all these amazing wildflowers and the weather's just right not too hot not too cold.
How can I experience Patagonia beyond the cities?
There's so much natural beauty to explore in Patagonia's protected areas you'll be amazed. Torres del Paine National Park in Chile is absolutely stunning with these massive granite peaks turquoise lakes and glaciers you can explore it on your own or with a guide doing either the W Trek if you're up for a challenge or the longer O Circuit. Over in Argentina Los Glaciares National Park is where you'll find the incredible Perito Moreno Glacier and El Chaltén which everyone calls the trekking capital you can drive there or take a boat trip. Down south there's Tierra del Fuego National Park right near Ushuaia with these beautiful forests peat bogs and amazing coastal views.
What's the best way to get around Patagonia?
Getting around Patagonia takes a bit of planning because it's so vast but you've got plenty of options. Domestic flights connect all the major spots like Buenos Aires Santiago El Calafate and Ushuaia with Aerolineas Argentinas being a popular choice in Argentina. Long-distance buses are great value and run regular routes between towns and across borders lots of people take the bus from Puerto Natales to El Calafate. If you want more freedom you can rent a car just keep in mind you might hit some gravel roads and weather can be tricky. Many people find guided tours really convenient since they handle all the transport for you.
How tough are the tours and can anyone do them?
Don't worry Patagonia's got something for everyone when it comes to activity levels. Sure there are challenging adventures like the Torres del Paine W Trek which covers about 75 kilometers over 4-5 days but there are plenty of easier options too. The Laguna de los Tres hike near El Chaltén gives you amazing views of Mount Fitz Roy and you can do it in just one day. Tour companies offer all sorts of different difficulty levels so you can pick what works for you. If hiking's not your thing try a boat tour scenic drive or cultural experience instead like viewing Perito Moreno Glacier from the walkways or taking a relaxing boat tour. The local guides are fantastic at making sure everyone has a great time no matter their fitness level.
