Chitwan National Park Tours & Trips
Ever thought about safari in Nepal instead of Africa? Chitwan National Park's the answer. Imagine elephant rides through jungle, rhino spotting, canoe rides spotting crocs and birds, and jungle walks with guides. Look for one-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers, sloth bears, and gharial crocodiles everywhere. Nepal's lowland jungle differs from the mountains completely, showing you a completely different picture - and a stunning one at that.

This tour was perfectly organized. We upgrade to a private transport instead of a tourist bus, which made things a lot smoother for us. The jungle experience was incredible, hotel accommodations were good for the area and considering the alternatives, guides were knowledgeable. We went for an extra elephant ride safari one day and for a jeep safari the next. All in all, it was a great experience.

Best places to start your Chitwan National Park tour
Starting your Chitwan trip from Kathmandu makes the most sense - it's well connected and our booking patterns show that planning about 54 days ahead gives you the best shot at securing good jungle lodges and activities, particularly when things get busy in peak season. While some folks do come in through Delhi and New Delhi, those routes need a bit more planning. You'll want to stay 2-3 days to really experience everything properly - from jeep safaris to nature walks and visits to the local Tharu villages too. Most visitors head to the main entrance at Sauraha, where you'll find all sorts of places to stay, from simple guesthouses to high-end jungle lodges and most places bundle in guided wildlife activities with your stay.

Best time to visit Chitwan National Park
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter in Chitwan is perfect for wildlife viewing with excellent visibility. Our 3-4 day safaris really deliver during these cool months, starting with peaceful elephant rides through misty grasslands at dawn when rhinos are often spotted. After active days exploring, guests gather around lodge campfires enjoying local Nepalese dishes and sharing stories. The multi-day tours include calm canoe trips on the Rapti River where you'll see marsh mugger and gharial crocodiles soaking up winter sun. Our naturalists know exactly which paths to take for spotting diverse wildlife this season.

- Spring 2026
Spring brings ideal temperatures and blankets of wildflowers to Chitwan. Our women's expeditions have become quite popular, mixing wildlife encounters with authentic cultural moments - you'll cook alongside Buddhist nuns and local women while female guides share their deep knowledge of the park. The 3-day safari packages are excellent for seeing nesting birds and baby animals, with clear hiking trails winding through forests full of blooming rhododendrons. Many of our guests combine their Chitwan visit with trips to Annapurna since spring makes both regions really accessible and pleasant.

- Summer 2026
Summer safaris work around the heat with early morning and late afternoon activities. We recommend our 3-4 day tours from Kathmandu by air to make the most of your time. The morning bird watching sessions are fantastic, and afternoon canoe rides on the Rapti River let you see animals gathering at the water's edge. Between safari drives, the lodge pools offer welcome relief from the heat. We've found some great sunset spots along the riverbank where you can watch deer and birds while trying local snacks and refreshments.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall creates ideal conditions for longer wildlife viewing sessions. The air clears after monsoon season giving you beautiful views of the Himalayan foothills as you explore. Our multi-day programs start with crisp morning elephant rides when animals are most active, followed by walks through fresh green forests and peaceful canoe trips. The women's expeditions really shine this season by mixing wildlife viewing with visits to local villages and women's craft cooperatives. Most guests opt for both morning and evening safari drives to catch animals during the comfortable autumn temperatures. The safari experiences in Chitwan match well with different traveler needs. Peregrine Treks stands out for how smoothly they run things, with Pradip getting special mentions from our guests for keeping everyone informed and on track. You'll find Rainbow Safari's team particularly friendly, and they've put together really solid wildlife programs that cover all the key experiences. The national park itself delivers reliable wildlife viewing, but the 3-day safari packages need a closer look before booking. Some TourRadar customers found their schedules too packed, and weren't quite ready for the walking portions that came up. A few mentioned they wished they'd known more about how they'd get from place to place. If you're choosing between operators, go with the ones who lay out the full schedule, transportation details and also activity levels upfront. Peregrine tends to do this well, which is probably why our travelers consistently rate them highly. The wildlife viewing stays strong year-round - that part you can count on regardless of who you book with. The key is matching your expectations to what each operator actually provides. The better ones, like Rainbow Safari and Peregrine, make this clear from the start and deliver what they promise without rushing you through the experience.

Is Chitwan really worth it for wildlife spotting?
You'll find Chitwan's one of Asia's absolute best national parks and there's a reason UNESCO made it a World Heritage Site back in 1984. The wildlife viewing here is incredible especially if you're hoping to spot the rare one-horned rhino there's about 690 of them roaming around. What's really special is you've got the highest concentration of Royal Bengal Tigers in Nepal plus an amazing variety of birds over 600 species if you're into birdwatching.
What's the best way to explore the park?
You've got several great options to choose from here. Jeep safaris let you cover lots of ground and you'll get great views across the grasslands as you head through different forests toward Kasara the park headquarters. If you want something more intimate try an elephant safari visitors love how close you get to the wildlife one traveler told us they got amazing up-close views of rhinos and monkeys. Walking safaris are perfect if you want to take it slow and really notice the smaller things plus you'll have expert naturalists showing you the best spots for seeing deer rhinos and sloth bears. For something really peaceful try a canoe ride along the Rapti River it's fantastic for spotting birds and you might see two rare crocodile species the Marsh Mugger and the fish-eating Gharial.
