What people love about touring Mongolia solo
- Essence of Mongolia - 3 Days
With New experience in Mongolia stay in ger camp everything perfect
- Essence of Mongolia - 5 Days
This was an excellent tour. I had an unforgettable time. Mendee, the guide was super knowledgeable and seemingly had really good connections and relationships with various people/places along the way. The driver was great as well. The experiences of the tour itself were really interesting and the opportunity to stay alongside families was so incredible. I definitely recommend this company and this tour!
- Treasures of Mongolia/OCT-MAY/
It was a nice trip with amazing places, people, natural beauty and historical sites to discover. The only challenge regarding the accommodation at nomad families with no running water, toilet and really basic facilities. Not recommended for vegetarian or vegan travellers. Otherwise, the general experience was great. Special thanks to my local guide, driver and travel companion Shine.
What our customers ask about Mongolia Tours for Solo Travelers
What's the best time of year for solo travel in Mongolia?
The summer months of June through August provide the most reliable conditions for exploring Mongolia on your own. During these months the temperatures are mild and stable making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking through Terelj National Park or exploring the Orkhon Valley. Tour operators run frequent trips during this period which creates a lively atmosphere with plenty of fellow travelers. Statistics show that about 70% of solo travelers book their trips for July and August when clear skies and comfortable temperatures are the norm.
What's the typical group size on Mongolia guided tours?
Tours in Mongolia tend to stay small with numbers ranging from 2 to 16 people. Most groups settle at around 8 to 10 travelers creating an intimate experience. Luxury operators like Tweet World Travel set their maximum at 16 while boutique companies such as Crooked Compass keep it even more personal with 2 to 12 participants. These smaller numbers allow for meaningful connections with guides and fellow travelers. A recent TourRadar review noted: "With only 8 people in our group we had plenty of time to ask questions and really get to know both our guide and fellow travelers while exploring places like the Gobi Desert."
Which Mongolia tour destinations are most popular among solo travelers?
Solo travelers gravitate toward the sweeping landscapes of the Gobi Desert with its towering Khongor Sand Dunes the rock-strewn terrain of Terelj National Park and the historic city of Kharkhorin home to Erdene Zuu Monastery. Cultural events draw large crowds especially the Naadam Festival in Ulaanbaatar and the Golden Eagle Festival in Ulgii. Tour companies like Agate Travel typically spend 2 to 3 days at each location letting travelers explore at a comfortable pace. According to a TourRadar traveler: "The diversity of landscapes from Gobi Desert to grasslands made every day feel like a new adventure and there were always other solo travelers to share the experience with."
What type of accommodation can I expect as a solo traveler in Mongolia?
Your nights will be split between traditional ger camps and modern hotels. The ger camps found in places like Terelj National Park and Khustai National Park offer shared accommodations that foster connections with fellow travelers. In Ulaanbaatar expect modern comforts at establishments like the Best Western Premier Tuushin or Ramada Ulaanbaatar City Center. A TourRadar traveler confirms: "Accommodation in the yurts (gers) was warm and comfortable and is highly recommended!"
How physically demanding are Mongolia guided tours for solo travelers?
Most tours require a moderate level of fitness. You'll need enough stamina for activities like hiking in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park climbing the Gobi's sand dunes and trying horseback riding near Lake Khovsgol. While journeys across Mongolia's vast spaces can be long companies like Agate Travel and Tweet World Travel use comfortable 4WD vehicles and plan regular breaks. A TourRadar traveler describes it well: "The pace was well-balanced with active mornings exploring places like Yol Valley followed by relaxed afternoons at the ger camps - perfect for solo travelers of average fitness."
How much interaction will I have with local Mongolian people?
Local encounters form a central part of any Mongolian tour. You'll spend time in traditional ger homes learn about daily nomadic life through activities like goat milking and share meals with local families. These genuine exchanges offer real insights into Mongolian culture. As one TourRadar traveler put it: "I was given many opportunities to see and learn about the customs and culture of Mongolia. The personal interactions made feel valued and very welcome."
