7 Day the Balkans Itinerary, incl. Sarajevo and Dubrovnik
The Mediterranean coast unfolds across 7 days, from Dubrovnik's historic streets to Budva's charming corners. Tirana's Skanderbeg Square and Ohrid's lakeside churches showcase inland beauty. Comfort awaits at 4-star hotels like Hotel Bracera, while expert guides share local insights.
- Day 1
Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina
Begin at Vrelo Bosne, a peaceful spring park outside Sarajevo. Get to the Tunnel of Hope museum early before the crowds arrive to learn about the city's siege history. "I fell in love with Bosnia-Herzegovina - the history in Sarajevo is incredibly moving and well-preserved." Spend your afternoon in Baščaršija, the Ottoman old town. You'll want about 3 hours to see the Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque and covered market. Stay near the Latin Bridge for easy access to the main sites.
- Day 2
Konjic and Mostar (140 km)
Get an early start to avoid traffic on the mountain roads to Herzegovina. Visit Konjic's 17th-century Ottoman bridge when the morning light is perfect for photos. The scenic drive through Neretva Canyon to Mostar takes about 2 hours. Visit the Old Bridge area in Mostar before the midday crowds. Watch your step on the stone streets when wet. Rubber-soled shoes are a must.
- Day 3
Dubrovnik and Kotor (250 km)
Start early in Dubrovnik to beat both crowds and heat on the city walls. Explore the old town, then take the cable car up Mount Srđ to catch the sunset. It's about 2 hours to Kotor. Try to arrive while it's still light to see the beautiful Bay of Kotor. "The bad traffic can eat into downtime, so plan extra buffer time between cities, especially in summer."
- Day 4
Tirana and Ohrid (300 km)
This is your biggest travel day. You'll need about 3 hours to drive from Montenegro to Tirana. Check out Skanderbeg Square and the Pyramid building before continuing to Lake Ohrid (another 3 hours). Border crossings can be slow so pack some snacks and water. Plan to reach Ohrid by sunset when the lake looks its best.
- Day 5
Lake Ohrid
Take a full day to explore UNESCO-listed Ohrid. Start at Samuel's Fortress for morning views. Visit St. Sophia Church and the ancient theater. Take a boat ride in the afternoon. Boats leave every hour from the main pier. Stop by the pearl shops to see local artisans at work using traditional methods.
- Day 6
Ohrid to Skopje (180 km)
The mountain drive to Skopje takes about 3 hours. Start your tour at the Old Railway Station, now a museum about the 1963 earthquake. The bazaar area gets especially busy in late afternoon. Stay for the Alexander the Great fountain's light and music show after dark.
- Day 7
Skopje Departure
Book an afternoon flight if possible since morning traffic in Skopje is unpredictable. If time allows, visit the Mother Teresa Memorial House which opens at 9 AM.
- Days 1-2
Vienna
Begin your trip in Austria's grand capital. Get to Schönbrunn Palace by 8:30 AM to avoid crowds. You can explore the palace gardens for free if you're budget-conscious. For dinner check out City Hall Square with its selection of traditional Viennese restaurants. Book your hotel near a U-Bahn station to make getting around easier.
- Day 3
Vienna to Zagreb
Travel through Slovenia's mountain landscape and stop in beautiful Maribor. The cathedral and castle are just a short walk from where buses stop. You'll be in Zagreb by afternoon to tour Croatia's capital. For the best photos of the city's iconic red roofs head to the Upper Town. Bring a light jacket since Zagreb evenings can get cool even in summer months.
- Day 4
Zagreb to Sarajevo
This day involves several border crossings so keep your passport accessible. You'll stop in both Banja Luka and Jajce. Make sure to see Jajce's impressive 72-foot waterfall in the town center. Once in Sarajevo visit the Ottoman bazaar at night when it's most vibrant. Take a quick walk up to the Yellow Fortress for great city views.
- Day 5
Sarajevo to Dubrovnik
- Days 6-7
Dubrovnik
Set aside at least 1.5 days for Dubrovnik. Take the cable car up Mount Srđ in the morning for the best views. A boat trip to Lokrum Island offers a nice break from the busy old town but note boats don't run November through March. Walk the city walls early or late to stay comfortable. Consider staying in nearby Cavtat for better hotel prices with regular boats to Dubrovnik.
7 Days in the Balkans, incl. Tirana and Belgrade
Coastal wonders stretch across 7 days, from Dubrovnik's ancient walls to Split's Roman palace. St. Stefan island, Budva Castle, and Kotor's UNESCO Old Town tell centuries-old stories. Morning light graces Zadar's Sea Organ, while Split's Riva promenade offers stunning sunsets.
- Day 1
Tirana, Albania
Begin your Balkan journey in Albania's vibrant capital. Visit Skanderbeg Square early morning to avoid the heat. The weather in Tirana can change quickly between cool mornings and hot afternoons, so pack light layers. You'll need about 2 hours to see the Et'hem Bey Mosque and Clock Tower area. Drive 2 hours north to spend the night in Shkodra.
- Day 2
Montenegro & Croatia
Take a 3-hour morning drive to Montenegro's coast. Visit Sveti Stefan before 10 AM for the best photos, then explore Kotor's medieval Old Town. The fortress walk takes about 45 minutes. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. A 2-hour afternoon drive takes you to Dubrovnik to walk the city walls. Stay overnight in Trebinje to save money on accommodation.
- Day 3
Bosnia & Herzegovina
- Day 4
Croatian Coast
- Day 5
Plitvice & Zagreb
- Day 6
Belgrade, Serbia
- Day 7
Belgrade
What people love about 7-day Mediterranean tours
- Dubrovnik to Athens: Timeless Treasures Tour - Small Group Tour
We had an excellent tour, my wife and I. Everything met our expectations, and the assistance from the tour guide was incredibly helpful. Highly recommended!
- Semi-Private Tour; Greece, Albania & N. Macedonia from Corfu to Tirana
This 5-day journey from Corfu to the Albanian Riviera was an enjoyable and relaxing escape that I won't soon forget. The entire experience was a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation, set against a backdrop of stunningly beautiful landscapes. The landscapes along the way were nothing short of breathtaking. From the picturesque coastal views to the lush greenery of the Albanian Riviera, every moment felt like a step into a postcard-worthy setting. The natural beauty of the region is simply awe-inspiring.
- Rome to Amalfi Coast - 7 Days/6 Nights
If you are hoping to experience genuine Italian culture, Italy On A Budget Tours is the perfect choice! We loved the Let's Go South tour which consists of a few days in Rome before heading down to the Amalfi Coast and could not be happier with our trip. Accommodation and transport throughout exceeded expectations considering the cost - "budget" does not result in bad quality! The tours are a perfect balance of history and exploration, free time and group socialising. Our guides, Veronica and Mariana (both Italian locals) were knowledgable, fun, flexible and accomodating and really felt more part of the group - hanging out with us all even when nothing was scheduled which made the experience all the more special. I highly recommend Italy On A Budget Tours and thank them for this amazing, treasured experience.
