Winter Walks & Trip Reviews
- Winter Toubkal Trek (4 days)
An enjoyable four day adventure treking to and around Mt Toubkal. Communication was lacking at times, although we stayed flexible and everything worked out fine. The pick up was on time and very comfortable, with a lovely breakfast provided before our walk start at Imlil and amazing lunch on return four days later. All guides were very friendly and experienced in the local area and terrain. English was not widely spoken and therefore don't expect a detailed cultural commentary but we always felt safe and with a little french we got by. Food to and from the refuge was good however breakfast and lunch at the refuge was basic and a bit small for the significant energy needed for the trek - extra chocolate bars definitely required! The refugee was warm with large fires and the communal dorms were very comfortable. Be aware the toilets and showers were very basic, no toilet paper or hot water. Pay attention to the kit list, prepare for basic accommodation and you'll have an amazing experience. Thank you to Ibrahim our guide, we couldn't have had a friendlier or more genuine man. Clearly fondly known to all in the Toubkal area and made our trek authentic, safe and as relaxing as climbing a 4000m mountain can be!
- Vitosha, Rila and Pirin - the Great Winter Adventure (Snowshoeing Trek)
Never tried this before until recently. Both my son and I had our doubts whether this will like us or not, but eventually it turned out that snowshoeing is a great fun! We had fantastic guide and snow conditions were mint. The variety of forestry and alpine hikes showed us a lot of the local mountain ranges. The itinerary was very well thought and the whole organization - impeccable!
- Summits and lakes of the Rila and Pirin Mountains (self-guided walking tour; all ground transfers included)
Great hikes in the highest mountain ranges of the Balkans - Rila and Pirin. A tour, carried out with perfection by Traventuria. Ground transfers, accommodations, navigation materials were all of excellent quality. Highly recommended tour operator!
What our customers ask about Best Winter Walks in the World
When is the best time to book a winter walks tour?
If you're planning to explore Yellowstone or Yosemite, aim for January through March when the snow is most reliable and temperatures hover between 20-30°F (-6 to -1°C). For Finnish Lapland, December through March is perfect - you might even catch the northern lights during your walks. To get the dates you want, it's smart to book 3-6 months ahead since the most popular tours fill up quickly.
What wildlife can I see during winter walks?
Winter is actually one of the best times to spot animals, especially in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley - locals call it the "Serengeti of North America." You're likely to see bison, elk, wolves, and bighorn sheep standing out against the white snow. Many travelers tell us they see more wildlife in winter because there are fewer people around, and the animals are more active, especially early in the morning or as the day winds down.
What type of places will I stay in during winter walks tours?
You'll find a good mix of places to stay, all ready for cold weather. In Yellowstone, you might spend nights at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge, while Yosemite offers cool options like deluxe Airstream trailers at Autocamp with nice bathrooms. If you're heading to Finland's Hossa National Park, you'll switch between regular hotel rooms and traditional wilderness cabins - it's a nice blend of comfort and authentic winter living.
What winter equipment comes with these tours?
The tours usually provide the basics you need for snow walking - things like snowshoes and poles. This is true for tours like the ones in Finland's Hossa National Park. But you'll need to pack your own winter clothes, including waterproof boots and warm layers. For example, if you're going to Yellowstone, keep in mind you can only bring one bag under 22kg because of limited space in the snow coaches.
How many people are usually in winter walks groups?
These tours keep things small and personal, which is important for safety in winter conditions. Take the Slovenia Julian Alps tour - they keep it between 4 and 16 people. Finnish Lapland tours also max out at 16 people. With smaller groups, guides can keep a better eye on everyone and make sure everyone's comfortable while walking in the snow.
