- 2 Day Mekong River Cruise From Houay Xay to Luang Prabang via Pakbeng (Thailand to Laos Downstream)
An Unforgettable Experience on the Mekong! I recently joined the 2-day Mekong River Cruise from Houay Xay to Luang Prabang, and it was absolutely fantastic. The boat was comfortable, with plenty of seating to relax and take in the stunning scenery. We stopped at charming villages along the way, giving us a glimpse of local life and culture. The highlight was the visit to Pak Ou Caves, with hundreds of Buddha statues hidden inside—it felt truly magical. Meals on board were delicious, especially the local Laotian dishes, which were a great introduction to the country’s flavors. Highly recommend this journey to anyone looking to see Laos in a unique and relaxing way!

What our customers ask about Mekong Cruises for Solo / Single Travelers
What are typical single supplement costs for Mekong River cruises?
Solo travelers can expect to pay between USD 700 to 1500 for single supplements on Mekong cruises. Several cruise lines offer ways to reduce these costs. Emerald Cruises and CroisiEurope often drop or lower supplements during quieter periods from April to July and September to October. The Avalon Saigon stands out by offering dedicated solo cabins that cost less than standard single supplements. A recent guest shared: "As a solo traveler I found the single supplement reasonable compared to other river cruises and my comfortable cabin on the Panorama Deck was well worth it."
How social is the experience on a Mekong River cruise for solo travelers?
The close-knit nature of Mekong River cruises makes meeting fellow travelers natural and easy. Most vessels carry between 40 to 70 passengers creating an intimate setting where guests quickly get to know each other. Ships like the RV Indochine II feature social spaces including the Panorama Lounge and sun deck where travelers gather throughout the day. One guest noted: "The crew went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and I made great friends with other passengers during cultural performances and group excursions to local villages."
What type of accommodation options are available for solo travelers?
Accommodations range from dedicated single cabins to standard rooms with single supplements. Most ships provide modern rooms with private balconies. The Mekong Navigator offers upscale suites with wide windows while hotels like Victoria Chau Doc provide comfortable single rooms on land. According to one traveler: "My cabin on the Avalon Saigon was spacious and comfortable with a floor-to-ceiling window that made me feel connected to the river even when relaxing alone."
What's the best time of year for solo travelers to cruise the Mekong?
Solo travelers often find better deals during the shoulder season from April to July and September to October. These periods typically offer more cabin availability and reduced single supplements. The high water months from August to November bring optimal sailing conditions on Tonle Sap Lake and fuller ships with more fellow travelers. A guest reported: "I went in October and found it perfect - good weather smaller crowds at attractions and a nice mix of travelers on board."
How much free time is there for independent exploration?
While organized activities fill much of the day the schedule includes pockets of free time especially in Siem Reap Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City. Evenings remain largely unscheduled letting travelers explore on their own or join optional activities like the "Saigon After Dark" food tour. Travelers note: "the balance between organized activities and free time was perfect for both group socializing and personal exploration."
