What people love about Self-Guided Tours in India
- From Delhi : Private Day Trip to Haridwar and Rishikesh
The trip from New Delhi to Haridwar and Rishikesh was outstanding. Both locations are holy, peaceful lands and ancient cities in which the Ganga is a major presence. Haridwar is among the towns in where the Ganga exits the Himalayas and is incredibly beautiful. Rishikesh, a very spiritual town was also amazing with its various ashrams and is the yoga capital of the world. Ganga Aarti Rishikesh is definitely a sight to behold. My guide Sanjeev, was excellent and apart from learning a lot from him through his extensive knowledge of these places and in India in general, was very hospitable and kind and proved more like family and then as a guide. Bunty, also very kind and polite, proved to be a great driver, going from place to place with relative ease and the transportation used was roomy and comfortable. The scenic beauty and calmness that was felt all throughout these places is what I'll remember the most as well as Sanjeev and Bunty, who made this trip all the more an incredible experience.

What our customers ask about Self-Guided Tours in India
What's the best time for a self-guided tour in India varies by region?
Weather patterns across India create distinct optimal travel seasons. Northern India including Ladakh and the Himalayas is most accessible from May through September with temperatures around 20°C making outdoor exploration comfortable. Southern regions like Kerala are best visited from October to March when humidity drops and rainfall is minimal. The luxury resort Coconut Lagoon in Kumarakom sees its peak season during these cooler months. As one TourRadar traveler who visited Ladakh noted: "The weather was perfect for exploring and photography during July."
What accommodation options are recommended for self-guided travelers in India?
India's lodging landscape spans from heritage properties to modern hotels. Places like Samode Haveli in Jaipur let travelers stay in converted palaces while international brands such as Le Meridien provide standardized comfort in New Delhi. Kerala features distinctive options including overnight stays on traditional houseboats through operators like Lakes & Lagoons where private crews handle navigation and meals. A TourRadar traveler noted: "The mix of heritage hotels and modern resorts gave us a perfect blend of comfort and cultural immersion."
How much should I budget per day for a self-guided tour in India?
Costs vary based on location and comfort preferences. Major cities like Delhi or Mumbai require about 150-200 USD daily for quality hotels such as The Imperial New Delhi plus meals and sightseeing. Smaller cities like Varanasi or Jaipur run 100-150 USD per day. A TourRadar traveler shared: "We found Kerala more affordable than North India with luxury resorts like Kumarakom Lake Resort offering great value around 200 USD per night including activities."
What are the must-visit destinations for first-time self-guided travelers to India?
New visitors often find success starting with established routes. The Golden Triangle connecting Delhi Agra and Jaipur provides reliable infrastructure and access to landmarks like the Taj Mahal. Kerala's circuit through Munnar Thekkady and Alleppey also suits independent travel well. A TourRadar traveler noted: "Starting with popular destinations like Jaipur's Amber Fort and Delhi's Qutub Minar helped us get comfortable with independent travel before exploring more remote areas."
How can I ensure food safety while traveling independently in India?
Food safety requires careful choices. Established restaurants like Bukhara in Delhi's ITC Maurya hotel and local institutions such as Karim's in Old Delhi maintain consistent standards. A TourRadar traveler advised: "We found great success following the 'peel it cook it or forget it' rule and always carried bottled water." Heritage hotels like Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur serve authentic dishes in controlled environments. Pack basic medicines and drink only sealed bottled water.
What's the best way to get around India independently while staying safe and comfortable?
Transportation options balance comfort with practicality. Private air-conditioned vehicles (typically Toyota Innova for small groups) provide door-to-door service while train routes like the Konkan Railway between Mumbai and Goa offer scenic journeys in air-conditioned coaches. Many travelers combine pre-arranged transfers with local exploration. As one TourRadar traveler shared: "The combination of pre-arranged transfers and flexibility to explore on our own was perfect - we felt secure yet independent." Hotels like Hotel Rockland in Delhi can arrange reliable local transport.
