What our customers ask about Train & Rail Tours from New Delhi
What are the most popular first destinations from New Delhi by train?
Most travelers take the Gatimaan Express to Agra first - it's a quick 100-minute ride to see the Taj Mahal, covering about 90 miles. If you're heading to Rajasthan, you might choose Jaipur (4-5 hours away) or Bikaner (7-8 hours away). The trains are quite comfortable, as one TourRadar traveler confirms: "Trains were fine, with meals booked where available or available to buy. The Agra to Jaipur train was a sleeper Two tier so comfortable for the few hours of evening travel."
Where should I stay the night before an early morning train departure from New Delhi?
Since most train tours leave early (between 6:30-8:00 AM), you'll want to stay close to Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. The Oberoi New Delhi and The Imperial New Delhi are both good options, just 2-3 miles from the station. One TourRadar traveler shares their experience: "Our representative picked us up at 6:30 AM from the hotel for a smooth transfer to catch the 8:10 AM train."
What's the best season for train tours from New Delhi?
Plan your trip between October and March when the weather is nicest, with temperatures between 68-86°F (20-30°C). Try to avoid summer (April-June) when it can hit 104°F (40°C), and the monsoon season (July-September) when trains often run late. Winter is an especially good time to see places like the Taj Mahal and Udaipur's Lake Palace.
What should I explore in New Delhi before starting a train tour?
Take time to see New Delhi's UNESCO sites - Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar, and the Red Fort. Don't miss Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk market and the Jama Masjid mosque. One TourRadar traveler describes their experience: "Embark through Old Delhi experiencing the historic and cultural side of this vibrant city while visiting the 'Great Mosque' and Sikh temple. The guided walk takes you through the history and culture of this vibrant city."
What's the average duration of train tours starting from New Delhi?
You'll find tours ranging from 1 to 34 days. Many people take quick 1-2 day trips to Agra on the Gatimaan Express, while others choose longer 14-day trips through Rajasthan. The longest route, "New Delhi to South India By Rail," takes 34 days to explore multiple states. One TourRadar traveler notes: "The itinerary was quite dense, making good use of the time available in each city. My brain was buzzing by day three."
What are the most common train routes taken from New Delhi on these tours?
The fastest option is the Gatimaan Express to Agra (1 hour 40 minutes). Other popular routes include the Shatabdi Express to Jaipur (4 hours 35 minutes) and overnight trains to Bhopal. These fast trains have air conditioning and serve meals. One TourRadar traveler shares: "The train rides were pleasant and much calmer than car rides. Gatimaan Express provides breakfast and is very comfortable for the journey."
How much time should I allow between train journeys when planning my itinerary?
Most tours plan for 4-6 hours between trains for sightseeing and getting to your next station. For example, on the Golden Triangle route, you'll arrive in Agra at 8:12 AM to see the Taj Mahal, then leave for Jaipur at 5:45 PM. A TourRadar traveler confirms: "The timing between destinations was well planned, giving enough time for sightseeing and rest."
