3 Day Morocco's Atlas Mountains Itinerary, incl. Marrakech and Imlil
The Atlas Mountains reveal their finest trails and villages over three active days. Walk from Tizi Oussem's Star Tour to Tamsoult waterfall, learn local cooking in Imlil, and follow scenic mountain passes to Agersoual. Includes guided hikes, traditional meals, and comfortable riad stays.
- Day 1
Marrakech to Azzaden Valley
Get picked up at 7:30 AM from Marrakech to avoid traffic and heat on the mountain roads. The 2-hour drive to Tahliouin shows off beautiful views of the Imlil and Azzaden valleys. Visit Asni's weekly market to see locals shopping for produce and crafts. "The market was a highlight – so different from Marrakech's touristy souks. Bring small bills if you want to buy dried fruits or spices." The Star Tour trek to Tizi Oussem takes 4-5 hours. Bring layers since temperatures change a lot between sunny and shaded areas. Watch your step on the Tamsoult waterfall trail if it's been raining and consider bringing hiking poles. Fill your water bottles in Marrakech since mountain water sources aren't reliable.
- Day 2
Imlil Valley Exploration
Spend the day around Imlil at 1,740m elevation, the main base for High Atlas treks. Start with a morning cooking class to learn Moroccan dishes, especially how to make tagine with local spices. In the afternoon take a 2-3 hour walk through walnut groves and farm terraces. "The afternoon light on the red clay villages was incredible. Our local guide explained how families still harvest walnuts using traditional methods."
- Day 3
Imnan Valley to Marrakech
Leave by 8 AM for your final trek through Imnan Valley, crossing Tizi N't Matert pass at 2,279m. The path to Agersoual village goes through small Berber communities where you'll see local farmers at work. After a 4-hour hike stop for lunch with valley views before driving 1.5 hours back to Marrakech.
3 Days Mount Toubkal Trek, incl. Imlil and Marrakech
The route winds through Imlil Valley, Aroumd village, and Mount Toubkal summit (4167m). A 4km acclimatization starts the journey, followed by an ascent to Toubkal Refuge (3206m), concluding with an 8-9 hour summit push and 2500m descent.
- Day 1
Marrakech to Imlil Acclimatization
Your trek starts with a 9 AM pickup in Marrakech for a 1.5-hour drive south through the Moulay Brahim Gorges to Imlil (1,740m). "The Riad in Imlil was a great stay before the hike with the owner being very welcoming and cooking delicious food." Spend your afternoon getting used to the altitude on a 4km walk through local Berber villages like Ait Souka and Aroumd. You'll see traditional terraced fields and walnut groves along the way. Sleep at a local guesthouse where you'll meet your guide and go over the route for the next few days.
- Day 2
Imlil to Toubkal Refuge
Plan for 4-5 hours of steady climbing along the Mizane Valley. The trail takes you through Aremd village and past the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch before the terrain gets rockier and steeper on the way to Toubkal Refuge (3,206m). A previous trekker notes: "Be prepared for some long days of walking, altitude and steep terrain. The refuge is quite basic, so bring supplies and don't forget a head torch!" Your guide will keep a steady pace to help you adjust to the altitude. The refuge offers basic dormitory beds and hot meals.
- Day 3
Summit Day and Return to Marrakech
Start your day early at 4 AM for the challenging climb to Mount Toubkal's summit at 4,167m. This is an intense day with 8-9 hours of hiking, including 900m up and 2,500m down. One experienced climber shares: "The summit should not be underestimated - cold and very steep and far. The guide was fabulous and made us all feel safe from start to finish." Your reward at the top is stunning views across the Atlas Range and Sahara Desert. After the summit you'll head back past the refuge and follow the main trail to Imlil, usually getting back to Marrakech around 5 PM.
3 Days in Atlas Mountains, incl. Marrakech and Imlil
The trail rises from Imi Oughlad (1,450m) through Ouirgane National Park. Tizi N'takhrkhourt (2,200m) and Tizi n Mzik (2,479m) passes connect four mountain villages with 4-5 hour daily walks.
- Day 1
Marrakech to Tinzert
Start with a 1.5-hour drive from Marrakech to Imi Oughlad (1,450m). Book your riad pickup for 9:00 AM to beat Marrakech's morning traffic. "We walked at a pace which was comfortable for everyone, with our guide adjusting to the group's abilities." The first 4-5 hour hike through Ouirgane National Park offers gentle terrain that's perfect for getting used to the altitude. You'll spot local shepherds with their goats among juniper and oak trees. You'll spend the night in a local family's home in Tinzert village. Quick tip: Pack hand sanitizer and toilet paper since facilities are basic.
- Day 2
Tinzert to Tizi Oussem
Start your day with breakfast before hiking through oak forests overlooking the Ouirgane Valley. The climb to Tizi N'Takhrkhourt pass (2,200m) is steep, so get an early start to avoid the hot afternoon sun. "The food was a real highlight - we enjoyed huge portions of delicious Moroccan tagines and couscous during our mountain picnics." The 5-hour route leads into the beautiful Azzadene Valley with its streams and walnut groves. You'll stay overnight in Tizi Oussem village gite, which has better facilities than the previous night.
- Day 3
Tizi Oussem to Imlil and Marrakech
Your final day includes a steep climb to Tizi n'Mzik pass (2,479m). You'll need good hiking boots for the tricky descent into Imlil. Consider taking a 2-hour side trip to D'Irhoulidene waterfalls for great photo opportunities. "The trek gets quite challenging on the third day with steep descents - proper hiking boots are essential." After lunch in Azib Brdoun (1,850m), you'll head down to Imlil before transferring back to Marrakech. The hiking portion takes about 5 hours.

- 3 Days High Atlas Mountains and Sahara Adventure
I had a great time. My child was under the age requirement but Ali made an exceptional for her which was very nice. It was my first time in Morocco I was in touch back and furth with Ali and he helped me so much with everything. During the tour Mohamad was very helpful although he is a spanish guide and spoke little english but he made sure I am accommedated. The driver Hamed and Mohamad kept playing with my daughter and they were so sweet with her. After the tour I did not have any bookings for hotel nor knew where to visit in Marrakech and I had to take the trains back to Casablanca so thanks to Ali for finding me a place to stay, arranged a Marrakech walking tour and checked all the train times. They transferred me to traim station for free. Ali, Himmi, Ahemd and Mohamad are great guys and they will made sure you have a safe, fun, happy and joyful tour and a stay in their country. The tour was amazing, they gave us plenty time for sightseeing, pictures and stops. The stay in the saharah and in the mountains was amazing, so nice and clean. The staff were great. All over it was the best tour and experience of my life. A must recommendated tour if your looking for a short one
