You leave Fez early and drive south through Azrou's cedar forest where Berber apes hang out in the trees. The route passes Midelt and the Ziz Valley before stopping in Erfoud for a quick break. From there you head to Merzouga and trade your 4x4 for a camel ride across Erg Chebbi dunes (or skip the camel part if that's not for you). By evening you're at the desert camp watching the sun drop over the sand, eating dinner around a fire, and sleeping in Berber tents. The drive takes roughly 8-9 hours total.

Your alarm goes off early to catch the desert sunrise from the dunes, which is worth the wake-up time. After that you head back to a hotel to wash up and have breakfast. Next you drive through Rissani and Tinghir toward Todra Gorge, which is seriously narrow and high up. Lunch happens somewhere along the way, then you continue into the scenic Dades Valley where the rock formations look like monkey toes and deserve their nickname. Your overnight base is in the Dades Valley itself (about 6-7 hours of driving today).
