Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Cologne

You'll arrive in Cologne and get settled at your hotel. The main draw here is the Cathedral, which sits right in the heart of the city and dominates the skyline. If you're coming by DB train, there's underground or public parking near where you're staying. After checking in, spend the afternoon wandering through the Old Town on your own pace. The hotel has rental bikes available if you want to cover more ground, though the old streets are pretty walkable. This is really your day to get oriented and grab dinner somewhere local.

    Included Activities

    • Visit Cologne Cathedral
    • Explore Old Town

    Optional Activities

    • Bike rental at hotel
    • Parking (underground or public lot near hotel)
    Landmarks

  2. Day 2

    Cologne to Düsseldorf

This morning you'll start cycling from Cologne along the Rhine banks heading toward Zons, a medieval town that's kept its original fortified walls intact. You'll see the Rhine Tower from 1388 and a working 17th-century windmill there. After Zons, continue on the Rhine Cycle Path toward Düsseldorf's Old Town, which is famous for having hundreds of pubs and restaurants all packed together. Later, relax at Burgplatz, which sits right along the river and gives you nice views back over the Rhine.

    Düsseldorf to Duisburg

You'll follow the Rhine Cycle Route to Kaiserswerth to see the ruins of Kaiserpfalz. From there, a small ferry takes you across to the left bank. The landscape shifts pretty noticeably once you cross, turning more industrial as you head toward Duisburg. Later in the afternoon, you'll take an informative boat tour through Europe's largest inland port, which is actually quite interesting to see from the water. By evening, you can explore the inner harbor area and find a place to eat among the bars and restaurants there.

The guided tour of this industrial site lets you climb an old blast furnace and explore the ore bunker, casting hall, gasometer, and blower hall. After the tour, you'll follow a comfortable former railroad path back to the Rhine banks. From there, cycle through rural areas and nature reserves along the Lower Rhine to reach Wesel.
