Itinerary
- Day 1Arrival in DakarYou'll arrive at Dakar International Airport and head to your hotel for check-in. Take some time to settle in and rest after traveling. 
- Day 2Dakar - Goree Island - KaolackAfter breakfast, you'll take a ferry out to Goree Island, a UNESCO site where you can walk the cobbled streets and see colonial buildings connected to the slave trade's history. Lunch happens on the island before you head back to Dakar for a city tour covering both modern and traditional African neighborhoods. By evening you'll drive to Kaolack in central-west Senegal. - Meals

- Day 3Kaolack - KedougouThis morning starts in Kaolack, known for its groundnut trade importance. From there you'll drive toward Kedougou, stopping along the way to photograph landscapes and wildlife. Lunch fits in somewhere on the road or in Tambacounda. You'll arrive at your Kedougou hotel by late afternoon. - Meals

- Day 4Kedougou - Iwol - Bedik Culture TrekYou'll head to Iwol to experience Bedik culture firsthand. A roughly one and a half hour trek through the Fouta Djallon mountains gives you a chance to learn about the Bedik tribe and their connection to the Bassari people. After that you'll visit the Fulani village of Ibel to see how they grow millet and groundnuts traditionally. A picnic lunch breaks up the day before you return to Kedougou. - Meals

- Day 5Ethiolo - Bassari Culture and HeritageThe drive to Ethiolo lets you discover the Bassari people and their authentic customs, from their habitat to traditional crafts and spiritual practices where Bassari and Peul communities live together. In the afternoon you'll check out wine collectors, sacred wood sites, and Alpha Yaya fort. You might see traditional initiation ceremonies with disguised dances if you're there at the right time. - Meals

- Day 6Ethiolo - Mako - Gold WellsYou'll drive about 128 kilometers to Mako, heading through Kedougou. At traditional gold wells you can watch local miners do artisanal gold extraction and selection work. Lunch happens at the camp restaurant, then you'll head back to where you're staying. - Meals

- Day 7Mako - Saloum RegionThe drive takes you to Saloum in western Senegal with chances to stop and admire baobab savannah along the way. This river-crossed region has small islands you can reach by traditional canoes, with mangrove-lined banks and lots of birds. You'll arrive and check into your hotel. - Meals

- Day 8Saloum River - Delta National ParkAfter breakfast you'll board motorized canoes for a cruise through the Saloum River's maze-like paths leading to the UNESCO-listed Delta of Saloum National Park. Try hand line fishing, return to your hotel for lunch, then spend the afternoon walking through the bush and visiting a local animistic village before heading back for dinner. - Meals

- Day 9Saloum - Joal - FadiouthYou'll transfer to Mbour with a stop to see Senegal's largest baobab tree, which used to be a Griot tribe cemetery. In Joal, the birthplace of former president Leopold Sedar Senghor, you can visit his childhood home. From there you'll continue to Fadiouth, the Shellfish Island, which you reach by wooden bridge. This unique animistic village has Catholic heritage too, with stilt houses and a remarkable shell cemetery to explore. - Meals
