What people love about New Zealand Tours in March
- New Zealand Explorer
I had such an amazing time exploring the North and South Islands that I’m hoping to come back with Wild Kiwi next year. Mark was an incredible guide, such a fun personality and really put us all at ease. Some of the days involved pretty long bus journeys due to NZ’s geography but Mark did a great job of breaking up the bus time by taking us to cool little towns, short hikes or view points. The pit stops made sure you didnt feel like you’d lost a day to travel and a couple of these stop offs ended up being some of my favourite parts of the trip. Thanks mark and all of the team and WK, you were awesome!
- Southern Voyager
Super awesome, tour guide was super fun and knowledgable! super fun activities and really just an amazing week in a beautiful country!
- Northern Voyager
Had a fab week exploring the north island of New Zealand with Wild Kiwi. Got to do so many fun activities, but my fav was surfing I even managed to stand up!!
What our customers ask about New Zealand Tours in March 2026
What unique activities and experiences are available in New Zealand during March?
New Zealand in March offers pleasant conditions across the country. Visitors can explore the geothermal features and Māori cultural shows at Te Puia in Rotorua or take fast-paced jet boat rides on Lake Wakatipu. The Waitomo Caves see fewer visitors this time of year and the wine regions are quieter than summer months. Accommodations like the Distinction Te Anau Hotel and Millennium Hotel Queenstown serve as convenient bases for daily activities. A recent TourRadar visitor noted: "The towns and villages all had their own special charm! I especially enjoyed the afternoon tea experience at Lake Tekapo with locals Angie and Stan."
What regions in New Zealand are best to visit in March?
Both islands offer excellent visiting conditions in March. The North Island's Rotorua and Lake Taupo area provides mild weather for geothermal sites while the South Island's Queenstown and Wanaka create perfect settings for outdoor activities. TourRadar travelers at the Terra Vive Apartments in Christchurch reported: "The South Island in March had stunning weather for hiking and photography." The Coromandel Peninsula draws visitors with its warm water temperatures at spots like Cathedral Cove.
What are the advantages of visiting New Zealand in March versus peak season?
March falls in shoulder season bringing notable benefits to travelers. Popular sites like Hobbiton and Milford Sound see reduced crowds while preferred lodgings such as the Rainforest Retreat in Franz Josef have better availability. TourRadar data shows many March tours have open spots but still provide great conditions for activities. A guest observed: "March was perfect - we could still do all activities but without the summer crowds and heat."
What are the best outdoor activities to do in New Zealand in March?
The weather in March creates good conditions for outdoor exploration. Visitors can hike the Tongariro Crossing trek through Abel Tasman National Park by kayak or take Milford Sound cruises with fewer people than peak months. A TourRadar participant shared: "March was perfect for hiking in Franz Josef with mild temperatures and clear views of the glacier." Places like the Distinction Hotel in Te Anau or Scenic Hotel in Franz Josef provide easy access to trails. Tour companies run guided walks in Mt Cook National Park and around Lake Tekapo during this period.
What wildlife viewing opportunities are best in New Zealand during March?
March offers prime wildlife watching as animals prepare for winter. Kaikoura provides opportunities to see sperm whales and dolphins while the Royal Albatross Colony in Dunedin features young birds. According to one TourRadar visitor: "We had amazing wildlife encounters in March - seals at Cape Foulwind and dolphins in Bay of Islands." Hotels like Scenic Hotel Kaikoura and Distinction Dunedin connect guests with wildlife viewing tours.
What tour length is recommended for visiting New Zealand in March?
Tours ranging from 7-12 days allow visitors to see key attractions. Popular March itineraries include the "Southern Voyager" (7 days) and "New Zealand Sweet As South" (9 days) which cover main highlights.
